Anyone considering getting a Wal-Mart Money Card, BEWARE!!!

If I can save just one person from the headaches that I experianced when I used my money card, then this report has done it's job...

Wal- Mart advertises the Money Card quite frequently, claming that it will pretty much change your life, and simplify everything. They claim that with the card, you can have your paycheck direct deposited onto the card, and you can use the card just like any other debit card, withdrawing cash at ATMs and paying at the pump. When I was 18, this sounded like a great deal, so I got one.

It ended up being the biggest nightmare I have ever experianced. After about 6 months, they changed the rules, so you can't pay at the pump anymore, even though they still advertise that you can. They have been charging me the MONTHLY FEE on a WEEKLY BASIS, and they make it SO hard for an employer to set up direct deposit onto the card. I would know, I work in HR at my job.

I filed a complaint with the BBB after it got to be too much, and they responded to the complaint with complete and udder BS. They claim that they had tried to contact me several times to resolve the issue, and they never did, and they claim that my report that they falsely advertise the product is false. I refused to acknowledge that they had resolved the issue, but since they claimed that they had tried to contact me several times with no luck, the BBB marked the file as "Administratively Closed", and took no action. So they continue to get away with it.

I cancelled my Wal- Mart Money Card, and replaced it with the UPside Visa card. The UPside Visa card does the same thing, but without the headache. I encourage anyone reading this to do the same thing if they already made the mistake of opening an account with those thieves.

These type of Debit Cards are generally for two types of people.  Someone who wants to use it for a specific purpose, not everyday use.  The other is someone who let's say has "banking issues", where they can not open up an account at a regular bank.

You do not sound like you are the first type since you are doing direct deposit. Since you are 18 it is very unlikely that you already have issues that would keep you from opening up an account at a regular bank/credit union.  Not only would a Bank or Credit Union give you a lot less hassle, it would be lower fees(as long as you manage your account).

Whether you go to a Bank or Credit Union, when you open up the account be sure to understand all of the terms of the account.  It would be better for you to actually go into a branch and before you open it up talk to the New Accounts person about the accounts. Have them explain their policies on the following items

- How they POST transactions

- Funds Availability

- Overdrafts and NSF Fees

In addition learn how to use a register, starting young you can make it a good habbit of writing down your transactions.  Thus keeping a good eye on your balance, and avoiding many of the pitfalls of people who don't manage their account.
