saw job ad on craigslist(secret shopper). received letter with instructions and a check($1,990.50). deposit check into bank account.  had to wait 5 days.  talked with bank rep-says that the check has been altered.

i said altered how-bank rep says it does not state here how.  i am not saying that you did it.  the bank said the check looked suspious,  we sent check back to them(walmart sales).

now i am geting phone calls and letters saying a bad check has been attached to my social security number. i don't think this is fair.  if the bank sent the back to them, why is there a bad check attached to my social security number.  the bank never cashed the chec, they just sent it back.

Good Grief

AUTHOR: Giselle - ()

How many notices does Walmart have to post in their stores, warning about the fake checks/money order scams? How many banks and post offices have to as well? There are warnings all over Craigslist, there are tens of thousands of complaints just like this all over the internet, maybe even hundreds of thousands! There are warnings on tv even! Yet people keep falling for this scam when it is SOOO OBVIOUS it is a scam! And thanks to those morons, this scam continues to thrive. To the OP (since you are new to the internet, let me explain that OP means Original Poster - that would be you): 99.9999 percent of Mystery Shopping jobs are scams! Either you will get a fake money order and/or check, be instructed to deposit and wire money somewhere and the bank informs you you are liable and have to re-pay the $ (you will also be investigated for fraud) OR, you will be asked to send in a sign-up fee and you will never hear from the people again.

So word of advice - the idea that you are going to make an income by Mystery Shopping is absurd! Also something to think about - in the real world, people do not send a check to a complete stranger, that is, if the check is valid. Think about it! Another nugget for you: the majority of the jobs on CL (that would be Craigslist) are scam ads. Don't respond to Secret Shopper jobs, they are ALL scams! The few legitimate companies involved in mystery shopping are so over-run with applicants, they do not advertise for shoppers, they already have more than they can handle.

YOU are lucky your bank caught this and saved you from being scammed.  The scammer is now threatening you and trying to get money from you in a different way.  These people are usually not even in the United States.. You have been lucky...so far. Just in case you didn't comprehend what I wrote above..The ENTIRE THING, including the Social Security threat is a Scam!
