I have a mail-order business and received a Western Union money order for $60.00 The company was authorized as an agent by Western Union/Wells Fargo to cash the money order.
The Wells Fargo/Western Union agent tried to charge me $7.00 to cash the M.O. drawn on its own bank which issued it, Wells Fargo, so I was outraged. The agent pointed to a sign on the wall which said that they charged 10 percent to cash the money order.
The money order was purchased from Western Union by my customer. Where company in Santa Fe is an agent of Western Union it is unethical to charge the recipient just to get his cash since they have already been paid by the purchaser.
It states right on top the M.O. that it is payable by Wells Fargo Bank (downtown) of Grand Junction, Colorado.
Western Union seems to be a smarmy mafia-type operation, which preys on poor Mexican immigrants in Santa Fe.

Misinformation by employee

When I asked your employee if I could deposit the check into my account and get payment, she said she "didn't know". That is clearly a lie from an employee of a bank, to know nothing of bank policies, and conflicts clearly with what you are saying now.
I am familiar with loan shark operations, where they locate themselves conveniently in a sort of "ghetto", in this case of Mexican immigrants, so you charge them preposterous fees to send money to their relatives, and loan them money at exhorbitant interest rates.
Granted, in New Mexico, these exhorbitant interest rates are probably "legal", certainly not "ethical", but I can hardly imagine your agents in Mexico charging a receiver $60.00 for cashing a M.O. for $600.00 from their relatives, but I'll bet that the fee is much larger in Mexico.
I can clearly see that Western Union/Wells Fargo employees their agents to try to clean up the complaints against them which from people who have been burned.

Cashing "On us" checks...

If the person cashing the check (you) does not have an account with the bank the check is drawn on, then the bank will charge a fee to cash it. Wells, BOA, USAA, every financial institute that I know of charges this fee for non-customers. You have options to avoid the fee: open an account with the bank or cash the check/money orger through your account/bank/credit union. Inconvenient yes but not a rip off.
