 ladies and gents.  I warn you about wgu university.  I graduated from this school with a supposed bachelors degree.  The problem is my transcripts. All the courses say "Pass" meaning that if you want to further your education at any other university you can't by any means utilize any of your courses for credits.  I learned this the hard way when I wanted to physically go to a university to pursue a different degree and was told none of my classes are transferable because a grade of Pass is considered a D in other institutions.  As far as employers recognizing this WGU as a real school.  No sir they do not.  Basically I wasted money and time.  I should have known when the courses are just based on assessments and no real work has to be done.  The tuition is agreeably affordable so this is just a case of getting what you pay for. End result I have a bachelors degree that I basically have to sell to an employer and a envelope of transcripts that are as good as nothing.  Please word of advice, do your research on these online schools because if we as a society don't bring these things to light these schools will continue to take advantage.  Lastly the school has employment opportunities in which they wouldn't even consider their own graduates for a career.  So what does that tell you?

No Transfer In OR Out By Design

AUTHOR: Dishwasher,MBA - ()

In the MBA -- ZERO transfer credits in. Most courses are in CU's. Not what other schools / people are used to. Then WGU arbitrarily says a CU is a semester credit. NO other college has a degree program with any - let alone the majority of their courses are ---2-----. Add on, Pass/ NO Pass and an obscure name like Desicion Analysis in lieu of quantitative accounting which most people know and you have a non transferable course. Their last course - Capstone takes two easy months and is six CU. They add a difficult course called strategic Management for ONLY two CU. Now they have a full time student.

Nobody has discussed Turnitin or task stream ? WTF is this ?

WGU - is like a nightmare maze, reminds me of the movie " The Shining". You cannot find your way out.

WGU is Wonderful

AUTHOR: AdvocateOfTruth - ()

I will keep my comment simple. I earned a Masters degree from WGU. I had no trouble whatsoever becoming employed after graduation. Without the Masters I could not have been employed in the positions I accepted over time. I feel that my education was well worth the money spent.

Indirectly works with WGU and an IT WGU student

AUTHOR: sigh - ()

The facts:

WGU is not a scam school nor is it for profit like UOP. WGU is an alternative way to complete a bachelors degree for less cost. They are a non-profit school. As for the Pass/Fail, that is posted all over their website and please reply with the schools that said a Pass is a D. Were those schools nationally or regionally accredited (read here if you don't know what that means: http://www.elearners.com/online-education-resources/degrees-and-programs/regional-accreditation-vs-national-accreditation/)

As perfectly stated from here (you may notice the post about mississippi, well, wgu is not sacs accreditated and that is why that school responded that way): http://www.techexams.net/forums/jobs-degrees/51715-western-governors-university-questions-answers-threads-related-wgu-13.html

"I've done my research on WGU, I thought they were to good to be true. But from everything I see they are amazing.

And like the others said, regional accreditation's are actually better than national. I've seen diploma mills have a national accreditation. Oh and WGU is the only online university that has ever been awarded 4 regional accreditation's.

From my research:

WGU Accreditations
Regional:
NWCCU link
CHEA link
HLC link
WASC link

National:
DETC link

Per Utah laws: "non-profit schools must meet to receive services under federal laws requiring the public education system to serve students in these schools...

B. "Non-profit school" means a school which:

(1) is not a part of the public school system;

(2) is operated with no intention of making a profit;

(3) does not exist to provide educational services to students enrolled in for profit residential programs;

(4) possesses a State of Utah Tax Exemption number and a United States Internal Revenue Service Employer Identification Number (EIN) and a favorable Exempt Organization Determination Letter;

(5) teaches the required subjects on each grade level as designated by the Board for the same length of time as students must be taught in the public schools;

(6) is properly licensed if so required by the appropriate governmental jurisdiction; and

(7) complies with any state and local ordinances and codes pertaining to the operation of that type facility or institution."1

A little navigating of the wgu.edu website shows you the degrees have worth and can get you a job or promotion (http://www.wgu.edu/wgu/nbc_news).

The school is also CAHIIM Accredited for the nursing Baccalaureate HIM Program (check for yourself here: http://www.cahiim.org/accredpgms.asp).

WGU also has the NCATE Accreditation for the teaching degrees. The NCATE is the standard for teaching degrees and WGU is the only online only college that has the accreditation (http://www.ncate.org/tabid/176/default.aspx).

The IT degrees are completely useful in getting a job or promotion. For example, I am taking the BSIT. I transferred out of most of the general Ed courses due to already having an Associate and spend most of my time studying for certifications. What certs, you may ask (although a dumb question due to wgu's website stating it). CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Project+; Microsoft MTA Infrastructure and Database tracks with one development certification, to name a few for my specific degree. Anyone good at IT knows those certifications are important in being hired for an IT job.

What you need understand:

WGU is not for everyone. It requires lots of determination and hard work to succeed. If you are the type who is lazy and will not put worth at least 20 hours a week to study then you will not succeed at this college and it will show in your job interviews. There are no teachers at this school as it is 100% self-study. They give you a study plan and the matericals then you are essentially on your own. There are course mentors (experts in the topic) that you can call or email when you have trouble with parts of the course or just do not understand the topic who will help you succeed even if that call is an hour long.

My opinion:

You made a complaint on a scam-reporting website yet your complaint shows your downfalls. The complaint is poorly written with very little structure, an indication of poor English grammar skills amongst other things. The content of the complaint makes me believe you expected to get a job right out of college. You and others should know by now, that it is very difficult to get job once you have a degree from any college in this country unless you went to Harvard or Yale. The fact that is apparent in your complaint is that you did not know this, which makes me believe you lack common sense and that will show in a job interview.

My test:

I wanted to see how many employers would send me emails or call me based on a completed resume from after I finish my wgu degree. I am surprised by the amount of emails and calls I receive weekly asking me for an interview. When they call, they typically state where they found the resume, and that they were impressed by the certifications and the way I explained the college.

Sometimes, adding a short history lesson and summary to a resume can help answer potential employers questions about your schools and certifications. The summary provides a description of your skill sets allowing them to place the resume in the maybe (look at later pile) or no pile and move on to the next. Adding a short history lesson to your schools helps to explain the schools learning model, accreditation, and to make it easier for them to understand the school/the value of what you learned.

My advice:

Improve your resume and highlight the skills you acquired. Improve your knowledge of WGU so that you can answer the potential employers questions about the school. They were most likely testing you to see if you knew anything about the school. Many students that attended other colleges, ones that get the job right away, can tell you most of the history of the school they attended. Why is this important you may ask? Well, it shows you have a desire to learn and chose that school for the quality of education you felt you were going to receive instead of just making it look like you just wanted to waste time by attending school. It's an indication of your character (unsure what I mean? That is your issue when it comes to getting a job. Your character defines who you are and what you are capable of achieving).  Also, improve your written language skills since many people will judge you poorly if your writing ability is terrible.

Example of a good resume that will have responses:

 (My exams could not be taken online due to my employment status regarding wgu else, it would have been a conflict of interest, which would have devalued the degree/certs in my/employer opinion).

Grading and Transfer of Credits at WGU

AUTHOR: Western Governors University - ()

Western Governors University does not use grades because our learning model is competency-based. With competency-based learning, students complete a course and advance when they demonstrate mastery of the subject matter by passing an objective test, a paper, project, or presentation. Unlike more traditional universities, students cannot pass a course by demonstrating a minimal amount of knowledge—they have to prove that they know the material and they must do that by earning the equivalent of a B grade or better.

WGU is accredited by the same commission that awards credentials to traditional universities, and WGU’s credits (WGU calls them competency units) are transferable to other universities. Our transcripts department often works with students to provide an explanation of our grading system to other academic institutions. I recommend that you contact them to ask for their help with this.

WGU now has more than 23,000 graduates nationwide, and we survey them and their employers regularly for feedback. In a recent survey, 65% of our graduates reported that they had received a new job, promotion, or a raise as result of their earning their WGU degrees. In addition, 97% of the employers of WGU graduates surveyed said that they would hire another WGU graduate. More information about WGU student success can be found here:  http://www.wgu.edu/about_WGU/graduate_success.
