Not saying it is a good policy...but..

Since they are a for profit business and have intent on keeping subscribers...they will auto renew. If you go to XM radio on-line website..it states the cancellation policy and procedure....
How do I cancel my account?
If you have the standalone XM Radio Online account, you can cancel it by signing in at http://listen.xmradio.com and clicking on "Manage Your Account." Then, clink on "Change Billing Info" and you'll find a link to cancel service. XM Satellite Radio customers must call XM Listener Care at 1-800-XM-RADIO (1-800-967-2346) to cancel. If you have a free trial account, there is no need to cancel -- it will become inactive when your trial period is over.
So although the policy to you seems like a scam..XM did not hide anything in small print. Do I agree with this policy? No, not really..I think a better form of customer service would be to contact the customer when the subscription is near end..not only to ask if you would like to re-new..but to let you know of any specials..offers..updates and news..now that makes business sense. But this is the way they do it so you were not scammed really..but simply subject to a policy designed to auto renew..it's not uncommon.
