The Yankee Candle Company store in Merrillville, IN appears from the outsider and anyone that has not worked there before, to be a "normal" and "typical" specialty candle store within a mall. After all, the store just sells wax and items that go with it.
The customers are always greeted so nicely with a "hello" and a "warm" smile. Everyone "appears" so happy to shop there as well as work there. The persona behind this particular "waxy image" is so beyond the real truth.
As a customer, I was always treated so kindly at this Merrillville, IN store and had noticed in the past there was always "HELP WANTED" signs in the window to this store no matter what time of year it was. So as a customer, I decided to take a different career path and apply for a position.
It was the biggest mistake of my life! Watch out for the ice behind the "warm" smile and friendly "hello" at this location. This store has so many problems through the few years I was there, I should have left earlier. I was caught up in the mix and didn't realize how negative, hateful, paranoid, and shady this store was and how it started from the Area Manager/District Manager and (possibly higher) and infiltrated the entire store level.
Yankee Candle, as from what gathered from working there, supported management that were negative, talked about associates behind their backs to others, obsessed with security cameras as if every associate was a liar and thief, and only understood one word: Disrespect. If anyone was new, they were ignorned and never trained.
Management wanted you to go above and beyond the call of duty to help each guest, but as an employee, you were treated like dirt. You were reprimanded for the smallest (petty) things (the label on each votive was not turned forward in the whole store), and nothing you did was ever good enough. Yankee Candle only cared about that dollar sign and how much money they could make off of each employee. You couldn't even use the restroom without being watched.
It was ridiculous. As for trying to make the job a bit fun, forget it. Everything associated with candles was "scripted", and serious business to guests, you had a quota to meet for the amount of hours you worked and if you did not meet it, you were written up! You felt as if you were going to a "funeral" instead to work at this store. For measly wages and hours, it's not worth it for a store that sells wax.
This particular store is the worst Yankee Candle ever. Within a 6 month period, they lost or fired within this store and area, all five managers, two district managers, massive associate turnover and had people from all over from adjacent states "run" the store while vacanies for positions were left open for months making an assistant do the job of the store manager for months without the pay. Everyone was playing "Boss".
This store is a real "problem" and I will never recommend it to anyone to work nor will I ever visit it again. It truly was a horrid experience considering that my past work history is exemplary. The problem lies either with this particular store and/or Yankee Candle Company.
