My wife and I recently had need of aquiring a second vehicle. Midway had a truck we were interested in from a newspaper ad. I called ahead and asked about what the price to me would be. I explained I was on crutches and did not want to waste my time and effort if the price was out of range. After being assured that I would qualify for all but 900.00 of the discounts. We went ahead and made the time to go see it. Suddenly they wanted 3k more than the ad. Not the 900 we had discussed.

When I asked how the price was arrived at. (several times) They could not; or would not respond. Now I know the salesman is little more than a good ol boy glad handed front for the real deal-makers. The nasty looking geeks that huddle in a group around their computers. Since I could noy get a straight answer as to how they arrive at their pricing. OR how much they simply wanted for the vehicle. We walked. Which is what I recommend we all do with the dealers that play the many splendored discount game.

A game even they can't seem to follow. It's time to do away with all the silliness. When you ask the price; if they refuse to answer.LEAVE!! The next day when I got a message from a sales manager. After he got thru implying I'm stupid for thinking I could buy the vehicle for as little as 1k more than the paper ad. He summarily cut me short; and hung up on me. Midway has many dealerships in the Phoenix area. And it will be a cold day in hades before I ever do business with any of them.

Its not the salesman ripping you off, the management likes to jack up the prices

I worked as a salesman at Midway for over 6 months. I know for a fact that the management likes to jack up the prices. As a salesman you are just suppose to sit and be quiet, because for the amount of hours they force you to work, your not making but about $2 per hour on an average. I've been put in situations where rebates would disapear, or the price would be raised thousands of dollars. There are some people that dont even notice, and pay it. The managers do this for 2 reasons, the salesman might have come in late or something to make the manager mad, so he doesn't want him to make any money, or he just thinks your stupid enough to pay it. They even rip off their own employees. I had one month I sold 19 vehicles, only 6 of them were actual sales. I even had managers tell me that the vehicle would never get financed. Do the math, average 5 hours per sale times 13 sales. I worked 65 hours for free that month. I can give one good piece of advice. When you buy a new vehicle your not obligated until you drive it off the lot. I would come back and pick it up a few days later, just to make sure I didn't get stiffed.

Joseph Set the Example! schlock operations continue to stay in business is because so many people simply sit there like a doormat

Joseph....

You need to be COMMENDED for your excellent response! The reason schlock operations continue to stay in business is because so many people simply sit there like a doormat and then reward the dealership for their CRIMINAL DECEPTION by purchasing the car or getting into a CAR FLEECE.
These people then come crying for help when they could have helped themselves by doing exactly what you did--walk out! Read thru these postings and watch for the signs:

'They kept me there several hours'--Oh I see, the salesman has a special cell to lock you into!

'They sold me...'--No Pal, you 'bought' and you could have 'not bought'.

'The salesman told me the contract says...'--Why not read the contract yourself?

'They told me they'd fix it if I bring it back next week'--Hello!!! Is anybody home? If they want your business, they will fix it BEFORE you buy it.

Joseph, you give me hope! Its clear the car buying public generally brings on their own problems in a large number of cases. I know this won't happen to you...you are the example of how everyone should handle the process.

Good luck,

Joseph did the right thing, None is correct, Jim is accurate

Joseph did the right thing by getting out of there. Midway does play games with their customers. I know this because my husband did in fact work there for a time.

Congrats Joseph, you saved yourself heartache and money loss.

None, you're correct. Midway treats 95% of their salesamen badly. If you aren't 'in' with the bosses you will make nothing. If the salesmen don't follow the 'rules' of the dealership, they will get their butts chewed. And yes, it will reflect on the paycheck. My husband worked 8 am to 9pm six days a week. His pay for the month would be around $1200. Deals would not go through but suddenly three days later the 'in' guy had the deal.

I will never get it out of my head the gentleman that paid cash for his truck and a week later was called and told it was sold to him at the wrong price and he had to pay up or return it.

Not all the car salesmen are bad people. They just work for bad companies. Most leave when they figure out completely what is really going on. The ones that hang on are those that are favored and well liked by management. They're taking home $10,000 a month.

Jim, good advice. If more consumers were accurately aware of their rights these dealerships would definitely go under.

Midway does a very poor job of satisfying the consumer. Their concern is not the consumer, but the money. I would advise everyone to definitely shop elsewhere. Losing your keys, credit card, paperwork and needing to resign are very well used tactics at Midway. Wearing you down to where you will sign and buy just about anything is what they're good at. Not having the ad car is one of their specialties. This business definitely needs a very thorough investigation.

This dealership is only one of several owned by Van Tuyl in Arizona.

Buyer beware, shop elsewhere!

Thank You
