I asked for and authorized for Pep Boys to do a tune-up after they looked over my car for 24 hours because the car engine was stalling when starting.

At their recommendation, that the problem would be fixed if they replaced the spark plugs, spark plug wires, ignition rotor, distributor cap & idler belt and replaced my air con belt.

I was charged $414.94

As soon as I started my car, I immediately felt I still had the same problem. I came back right away and complained that I still had the original problem with the car. I was told to leave the car and they would try to fix it and that it will be ready the next day. They asked my permission, as they needed the engine diagnostic apparatus to fix my car and I'd be charged $79.00 additionally. I replied, 'no problem,' as long as they fixed the car's problem.

The next day I came back I was told they don't know where to hooked up my car to the engine diagnostic apparatus and was advised to take my car to a dealer instead.

I asked Rosa [the manager kuno] why I had to pay so much money while I still have the original problem of my car. She replied, I asked for a tune-up so they replaced the above parts. I replied the parts that you replaced is not what's causing the car to stall.

My car is 1982 Mercedes Benz, SL380. It so happened at 9 pm, and they are the only car repair open at that time. I feel they know this and take advantage of the customers that come in later in the evening

UPDATE:

Since PepBoys would not or could not fix my car, I had the car fixed by a friend that works a car dealership, AND KNOWS MERCEDES BENZ. He fixed the idle and the gas pedal linkage, and that's all the car needed!, I had to pay $150.00 to have this done. I emptied my bank account to pay PepBoys and had no gas money or car to do deliveries (a temporary job) for 2 weeks and lost that job and about $850.00 in pay. These people refused to settle this problem they created for me, so I feel they owe me my expenses an additional 15% for my inconvenience for a total of $1,150 if they settle with me before I have to take any other action.

You got what you asked for

I think you pretty much sumed it when you wrote;

'I asked Rosa [the manager kuno] why I had to pay so much money while I still have the original problem of my car. She replied, I asked for a tune-up so they replaced the above parts.'

You didnt tell them to FIX a certain problem or DIAGNOSE it. You thought you needed a Tuneup and ordered one. They performed one for you. Then when it didnt fix the problem they offered to diagnose the problem for you.

However you stated they were unable to do so cause of being unable to hookup their diagnostic equipment. They informed you of this & told you that you would need to go to the dealer. THEY DIDNT RIP YOU OFF.

They were honest with you and didnt try to charge you for something they didnt do. You however felt like you should get something for nothing. You thought your problem should have been fixed by what you thought would be the easiest & cheapest means possible.

You should have told them the original problem and asked for the DIAGNOSTIC to start with & then they could have sent you to the dealer to start with. However they did do the work you contracted for. SO GET OVER IT !!!!

I would never bring my car to them

I'm no big fan of Pep Boys, I would never bring my car to them. However in your case, it sounds like they did nothing wrong besides charging you over $400.00 for a tune up. They did what you asked them to do. It didn't solve the problem so it's gotta be something else.

I think they were correct in claiming they couldn't find the connection to plug in their diagnostic thingy. I'm not a mechanic, but I don't recall all cars having that twenty years ago.

To find a good mechanic, try going to CarTalk.com - if you check out the site you will find a link that will show you posts from people that had good experiences with mechanics in your area. The website is from those two crazy brothers (Click ad Clack) in Boston who have a program on public radio called Car Talk every weekend. They've been in the repair business for over twenty years, and take calls from people like you having trouble with their cars. (Their lawyers are said to be Dewey Cheetam and Howe!) If you do a search on their website you just might find a similar problem as yours in the archives. Good luck!

this is getting old

IM SO TIRED OF SEEING PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT SOMETHING, NO MATTER WHAT IT IS, JUST TO HAVE SOME KNOW-IT-ALL TELL THEM THAT THEY GOT WHAT THEY DESERVE. ALSO 415.00??? FOR A TUNE UP???
WHO DESERVES TO PAY OVER 400.00 FOR A FREAKIN TUNE UP? I REALIZE THAT THE CUSTOMER SHOULD HAVE EXPLAINED HIMSELF BETTER TO PEP BOYS (AS IF THEY HAVE A REPUTATION OF CARING); BUT FOR THAT MUCH MONEY I CAN SEE WHY HE IS UPSET. DID PEP BOYS THROW IN A FREE SET OF TIRES TOO? I COULD NEVER BE A MECHANIC... IM TOO HONEST.

Yes, I know how to change a started, battery, oil and plugs. I suggest anyone who dirves should know or know someone with an understanding of automoblies. I have always been able to diagnosis my cars with what the trouble, it is taking responsibilty for your belongings.
