BrucePeru is a non-profit based in Trujillo, Peru that preportedly helps street children in Peru and actively seeks international (paying) volunteers to help in their cause. Volunteers are required to pay $290 a month (up front with no refunds) and are lured to Peru with a long list of lies that appear on the BrucePeru.com website.
When volunteers arrive, they quickly find that the organization is a fraud, it's badly mismanaged, volunteers live in deplorable conditions, and the money does not go to the children. Bruce is a very adept internet web designer and has created numerous websites that sing his praises, BUT DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ ON THE INTERNET. Bruce has linked to numerous other websites that seemingly give him credence, but believe me, you will regret doing any business with this organization. Bruce Peru and all of the off-shoot sites related to this organization is a scam and Bruce is a fraud and liar. Please avoid this organization at all costs...

BrucePeru tricks good people to come work for a dishonest NGO

Robert and Max are correct!
I volunteered for BrucePeru very recently and while I agree the actual work of helping children is great, the founders of this NGO are not. As stated earlier the websites are filled with lies and misconceptions. They claim to be in several locations in Lima, they are in one. They claim they are in schools throughout South America, they are not. They show a volunteer house that supposedly is used for volunteers in Lima. It does not exist. If you question Bruce to show financial reports as to where the money goes, he becomes intimidating and threatening towards volunteers. He is not a good man in fact he can be quite scarey, the volunteers whom come to work with BrucePeru are good people. Do yourself a favor find another NGO to work with.

Avoid Bruce Peru at all costs

No, I'm sorry Jo, I am sure that you worked hard in your placement, and this is how Bruce Peru continues working, through the hard work and dedication of volunteers duped into working for a fake NGO. I hope that you one day get the opportunity to go and work in a properly organized NGO that is actually about helping people instead of making money and stealing it from the very people it is supposed to support.
Take a look at the amount of information there is on the web suggesting BrucePeru is a fraud - are you suggesting that all of these people just had some kind of personality clash with Bruce? And then that they disliked him soooo much that they subsequently went on to make false accusations about his charity? People need to feel very strongly to take action like this, and if the charity was working in the way it should, then people would not be online criticizing. The number of people voicing their opinion online are but the tip of a large iceburg.
Infact, go to one of the thirty or so different websites that Bruce has (why so many?) the pages are riddled with false information, from the numbers of children that Bruce claims to be helping, to pictures of children which he uses repeatedly on every site, for different countries!
I shall end with my favourite quote that I read on one site 'Bruce, just leave those kids alone'

I worked for Bruce Peru and Bruce Ecuador for an entire year January 2007- December 2007. I can verify that the charity does fantastic work in helping marginalised children in both of the countries I worked in, and the founder of the organisation has the very best intentions.
Perhaps the writer of this report did not get along with the founder or had a bad experience volunteering, but having done it for a year- including 9 months as a project director in Quito, Ecuador, where I was personally responsible for fundraising and had control of the finances- I can say catagorically that the charity is working effectively to help poor children and families, volunteer fees do go towards helping the projects and running costs, and I had an absolutely fantastic year working with Bruce Peru and Bruce Ecuador. I would recommend it for other potential volunteers.
