I've been a card member with Geico Mastercard for several years. I got their card so I could have a card with a small limit that I could buy on it on occasion and pay it off and improve my credit score. I never went to auto-pay because if you change bank accounts then it becomes a pain to get it switched and make payments. I've NEVER been late on a payment with them the entire time in the years I've had their card. I pay online every month.

The end of February I went online (like I do the end of every month) to make my payment due March 4th (it vairies on the actual day its due every month). I usually print a copy of my payment but was pretty scramble brained at that time. I was pregnant with my husband and I's first child and I knew he was due the beginning of March so I was in a hurry to get it out of the way.

Well, right on queue we went into the hospital the beginning of March and had our brand new baby boy. We were in the hospital for 4 days due to an emergency C-section. Everything went well and we came home with our new baby.

March 14th at 8:14am I get a call from 'Cardholder Management' 1-516-576-8785. I answered the phone half awake, exhausted from a night without sleep with a new infant. It was Geico Mastercard letting me know my payment of $20 was late (10 days in their estimation). I assured the lady that I had gone online and made my payment the end of February like I always do. She said I hadnt. I let her know I would pull my payment record and with the confirmation number, if for some reason I wasnt able to find it I would make a payment immediately. I also let her know that I was in the hospital the beginning of the Month. She stated after my payment cleared, call in and they would surely help me out.

I went on my computer to find my payment and couldnt find it. I immediatly went on and made a payment for the full amount. I then called in to customer service and spoke to a representative and she told me that once my payment had cleared they would be happy to waive the late fee due to I'd never been late and that I was in the hospital.

It slipped my mind because our baby got ill and we had to take him to the doctors several times. I went online and made a payment for April and remembered that I hadnt called back about getting the late fee for March waived, so I gave them a call. I spoke to a girl named 'Laura' and explained the situation and she notified me that she couldnt waive a fee. She said that the computer lets her know if an account qualifies for a late fee and mine didnt qualify for a waiver EVER regardless of the situation even though I've never been late. She then advised me that I have the ability to make a payment online or do auto pay. I advised her I was aware of the ways to make payments and that I do indeed go online EVERY month and make a payment.

I then asked if I could speak to her supervisor. She told me that she could get a supervisor but advised me the supervisor would not waive the fee either. The supervisor got on the phone, I explained the situation and she told me the girl I spoke with in March lied because Geico doesnt waive late fees under any circumstances and that she shouldnt have promised a waiver. I told her if that was the case that I would like to close my card. With no second thought she said 'I can close your card for you but you will lose your 'Gecko dollars' (whatever those are). I told her I dont care to have a card with a company that doesnt care about their customers. So she quickly closed my card and told me I would have a confirmation letter come in the mail and wished me a good day.

Just wanted to warn people about this company. You could think, because you are a good customer and pay on time every month that you cant be affected, but its simply not true with this company. Emergancies happen and this company doesnt care even though you've had years of ontime payments with no late payments ever. Geico Mastercard considers your account deliquent 2 days after your payment is due and will call you after 10 days. They dont care about their customers. Line their pockets for years with their crappy 20% interest rate card but god forbid that anything happens to you they wont waive a $29 late fee, not even once.

Avoid the headache and the bad marks on your credit, decline on the offer if you get one from this company.

HUH?

Let me understand this.....I quote

'I immediatly went on and made a payment for the full amount. I then called in to customer service and spoke to a representative and she told me that once my payment had cleared they would be happy to waive the late fee due to I'd never been late and that I was in the hospital.'

'It slipped my mind because our baby got ill and we had to take him to the doctors several times.'

HUH?? First you say that you immediately made the payment in full and that the customer serivce rep said that when it cleared, GEICO would waive the late fee. Then you say it slipped your mind. Once again...HUH???

The GEICO rep was obviously under the impression that you had already made the payment when she said the late fee would be waived. You need to take responsibility and realize that the world doesn't stop when you have a baby. Having a baby is a self inflicted condition, and entitles you to nothing. The fact that you carry a balance on your credit card proves that you can't afford to have baby.

Thank You
