I entered into the PsyD program at Capella University. I was informed that I should check with the state licensing board to make sure that the program meet the requirements. After checking I discovered that it did and that I could enroll. After completing the first year and a half (they required 30 hours) I went to AZ. for a year in residence. During the first three days we were required to attend seminars on the practicum, dissertation, and internship. To my surprise we spent an enormous amount of time reading a 'handbook' that should have been presented to the students prior to enrollment. This book included information about the requirements for a practicum site as well as an internship site. The college informed us that we would have to follow APA requirements for the sites but that most places would not take us because Capella was not APA accredited. When I approached the individual giving the lecture I was informed that it was going to be almost next to impossible but 'It could be done'. Then we were informed that we were assigned our mentor for our dissertation and that we MUST choose a topic that was of interest to that person. Now I have already spent in excess of 25,000.00 at Capella and have basically been told that I would be unable to get a practicum site and I an sitting in AZ.

When I left I had 82 hours toward my PsyD and had wasted an anormous amount of money to find out that I would be unable to finish. I had been ripped off. I did a search once I returned home to discover that I was not the only person that this happened to. I would like to state for the record that my GPA at Capella is a 4.0 so this is not a post from a scorned person as a result if a poor grade.

I hope that this help others. I have exhausted my student loans and am not unable to finsih an education that I worked hard to get. I am disheartened that this is able to continue without any recourse for others like myself!

You're not alone

Hi Concerned, You're certainly not alone. Capella University won't provide you with ANYTHING if it will show how evil they really are. As long as you've wasted more than $25,000 with them, you should also demand your 'compete education record as defined under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act' (use those exact words) with the United States Department of Education, Family Policy Compliance Office - after all, you've already paid for those records which shows that you were an outstanding student. When Capella refuses to comply with your demand within forty-five (45) days of your initial request (which, based on their already established history of violating FERPA, you can be assured they won't honor your request either), you should file with against them with the Federal Law Enforcement agency that will launch (another) investigation against them; they may be contacted at:

Family Policy Compliance Office
U.S. Department of Education
400 Maryland Ave. S.W.
Washington, DC 20202-5920
202-260-3887

Considering that you earned a 4.0 in all your courses (Capella especially likes to abuse such students), you need to know that there is currently more than one FERPA complaint pending against Capella University - which have been filed by more than one student - for Capella's refusal to comply with the law. In fact, Capella was recently found to have violated FERPA on ten different counts and that investigation is still ongoing. Be prepared; however, for Capella and their attorneys to lie to you (and others) about your records as well as refuse to provide everything required under that law - they already have an established track record doing that to other students.

Thank You
