1rate.com or 1 Rate Communications, Inc. uses catch frases like "3.9 cents per minute anytime" in their spam e-mail to lure people into opening the message.

Once opened, they trap any and all your accounts (checking, credit, debit, etc.) to begin making unauthorized drafts on any account number they can capture.

With me, they somehow got my checking account number and made an unauthorized draft of $49.95 in April, 2003. I caught the draft on my statement and filed a fraudulant report with my bank only to find they did it again in May, 2003 for another $49.95.

I called my bank right away and tried to stop the second draft but they said I couldn't stop it and my only recourse was to come in and file another fraud report. When I told my bank what I had found on the internet about 1rate they said I should probably call the police instead of them.

I asked my bank to please stop paying the drafts until I could straighten this out but my bank said they couldn't stop it even if they continued to make the drafts every month for the next 6 months.

My bank said the only ones with the authority to stop the drafts was the police. I notified the Sheriffs Department and had to change my checking account to stop it.

I believe the name of the company should be Irrate, not 1rate. I am not a rich man. I fact I'm 100% disabled from the military and living on a fixed income. The cost of the drafts has been tripled by the NSF charges from checks bouncing because of the unauthorized drafts. All of which I am afraid I will not recover 1 penny.
