So you find an ad on craigslist or in a newspaper saying that there are Security Guard Positions opened to be filled immediately. They pay anywhere from $8.25 to $28.00 an hour and no experience is required you do not even need your G.E.D or High School diploma. So you call and schedule an interview. Someone picks up asking you some basic questions. Once you finish talking they tell you that you are a perfect candidate for this position. All you need is to bring an $80-$100 deposit and come professional. So you go to the interview and all of a sudden you have to take all these classes in order to work and have to pay anywhere from $230 to $1100 dollars to fully qualify. But the person interviewing you tells you that you will make the money back in no time. So you pay your fees and take all your classes. They tell you that you have to pay in full to work or get placed. Once it is time for you to work someone from that company that you put all your time an effort into sends you somewhere that is not even hiring. So you go to another security company and they tell you all that none of your certifications count and the majority is not even required.

This above scenario is a popular Security School Scam routine being practiced all over New York City. Ads on craigslist similar to the ones below are perfect examples.

Corporate Security Guards Needed
Security Guards Needed ASAP! - (NYC)
IMMEDIATE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY FOR NYC GUARDS - (Financial District)
UNEMPLOYED? BECOME A NEW YORK STATE CORPORATE SECURITY GUARD!!! - (ALL BOROUGHS)
SECURITY OFFICERS NEEDED EXCELLENT PAY
NEED SECURITY GUARDS TO WORK BY NEXT WEEK- (INTERVIEWS BEING HELD ALL WEEKEND)

Once you call them they tell you about an enrollment fee and once you get there they claim you have to pay this ridiculous amount of money for 8hr pre assessment course , 16hr OJT (on the job training) course , Fire guard class and/or a bunch or other fictitious or unnecessary courses. If you want to become a security guard in New York State all you need is the 8 hr pre assessment course this according to the New State Website http://criminaljustice.state.ny.us/ops/sgtraining/index.htm. Once you are hire by the Security Company not some security school you do the 16hr OJT (on the job training) course. That is the reason it is called on the job training. All the material for the Fire Guard test can be found at http://www.nyc.gov/html/fdny/html/c_of_f/coff.shtml. You go to your fire department and take the test for $25 and that is it. Anything else you need the security company would not have a problem providing it for you. In fact most security companies would make you take the class over anyway so it is completely pointless to pay for classes like Anti-Terrorism, loss prevention and whatever else these security schools make up.

Another thing they like to do is make you pay in addition to your enrollment fee you have to pay an administrative fee and a fee to register with the company. The whole point of working as a security guard is to get paid not pay a bunch of unnecessary and bogus fees to some security school. And no law requires anyone register with some security school to be a security guard. When you are in the interview your representative will talk fast and leave no room for questioning very much like salesman. They will even pretend to have interest in you. Once you pay them you are no longer of interest.

At 1st Security Preparation & Placement, Inc you pay all this money based on misrepresentation of the facts. They claim the more courses you have the more money you start off with. The security companies control your pay and it is based on your experience. Once you are done with their vastly overcharged program they give you a certification made on a piece of paper in which anyone can make themselves on any word editor. According to the state website This certificate must accompany the security guard's registration application when submitted to the Department of State. http://criminaljustice.state.ny.us/ops/sgtraining/sgpcourses.htm. They never mention any about this. So once you have your worthless certificate you go to a security company (one that is actually hiring) and they tell you that you have to take everything over. Every application for a security position asks for your registration number and unfortunately worthless certificates do not come with state registration numbers.

It is highly recommended that if you want to be a security guard do all you're training and licensing through the security company not a security school. If you have to go to a security school you only need the 8-Hour Pre-assignment Training Course (about 40 dollars) the 16 hour is the on the job training you get once you get hired. All the information is on the state website anything stated otherwise or is said in way to mislead you is a lie and is fraudulent. If you were a victim of this scam post your story to help stop this fraudulent practice.

The original report is 100% true . This company is nothing but a scam artist. I was told to come with 100$. And then the contract came out after telling me he is the owner and will be hired as soon as the 8hr and 16hr were complete. Both classes cost 90 bucks for both . I paid 788$. He was not the owner just scum bag doing what he does best scamming people. They send you to a random security place and they don't even start at 17.50 as he told me . More like 8$. I will be going there this week to stand outside and show anyone going in for an interview to turn them the other way and ruin their scheme and ripping people off looking for work. I don't tolerate this and I will be seeing them soon. So don't listen to the recruiters they're just in it for your money . Hence why did it cost almost 800$ for 90$ in classes. Ps they'll wanna sell you more bs classes like anti terrorism or CPR . I went to a real company who took not a dollar from me universal protection. Please seek that company if got a job for goldman sachs from them not like these scum. And please do say something against these true words ill be more than happy to make you eat them . See ya soon:)

Regarding the pre-assignment class

AUTHOR: rosie485 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, January 24, 2013

I found this article very helpful, but from my recent experience going to some of the "licensed" schools in NYC, they are all selling the whole package now, charging $130-150 up front for the 8 hr, 16 hr and fireguard class all at once.  It seems they won't let you just take the 8 hour class by itself, which should be, at most, $40.00 as you stated.

Where can someone go and be allowed to take only the 8 hr class?  They are making this hard.

Response to 1st Security employer and The truth Utah

AUTHOR: NYC31 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, January 03, 2013

Both of you are right. But unfortunately there is more truth to what Utah is saying than yours. I myself reside in NYC and have a contract with your company. When I had gotten the interview I was told that after my training was completed I would start working immediately. I was told by your representatives that I would be placed immediately. However, after my training was complete, I did not start working right away and I'm still unemployed. Instead of being placed like I was told, I was sent out to other security companyies to apply for a job with them.

I have also received a anti-terrorism certificate from yall that I was told I needed when I in fact don't. There is no certification for anti-terrorism. All certification programs certificate comes with a seal. I know this because of actual facts and not my opinion. I am a Security Services and Management major and know all the actual certifications that a guard can posses as well as must have.

Another thing that your company does is make people pay them to do a criminal background check on them. This is what you tell me and all of your other customers. If I had of known this information before I would have never done it. I nor anyone else is suppose to pay you to do a criminal background check on us. If so, that means we pay you as well as NY state to do a criminal background check and I know that isn't so. The fingerprinting that we undergo is part of the criminal background check.

My professors are actually professions of the field. They are also high ranked police officers. Yes you can respond with police officers and security guards are totally different. However, the truth is they are not. the only difference in their job is one is a public sector and protects the from crime and the other is a private sector that only protects the company's property, employees, and customers/residents. Police officers have the legal right to apprehend/cuff someone, security guards only have citizen arrests rights which is also very tricky and muset be used with extreme caution.

artists New York City New York   ( Published
on the web on June 29, 2009.) Truth from Utah has
written a very colorful, yet factually inaccurate description of First Security
and security training. He provides no supporting data for his claims, nor does
he sight any documented resources on which he was not giving a valid work
opportunity. He is certainly entitled to his opinion, but as trainer and as a
company that helps with job placement assistance.            At First Security Preparation & Placement , we
feel it is our duty to put his opinions next to the facts and let the readers
see both sides of the issue. Please note that all of the facts listed are well
documented and their sources are cited. (www.firstsecurity.ning.com) He begins his article
criticizing the fact that And no law
requires anyone register with some security school to be a security guard .
The reality is that New York State requires individuals to be certified in
order to work in the capacity of a security guard. More specifically, a
candidate will also be required to have an 8 Hour Pre Assignment or Annual in
order to obtain an Unarmed Guard Security License. That
being said, like any certification or educational program, the more you have,
ultimately will lead to a broader range of opportunity here in New York City. Utah
and New York are two very different places . Although we can not speak for all
security training companies, all students who take 8Hour Pre Assignment/8 Hour
Annual or 16 OJT with First Security are registered with New York State
Department of Criminal Justice. Listed Below are sites where all prospective
candidates can find more factual information. FACT: http://criminaljustice.state.ny.us/ops/sgtraining/sgpcourses.htm FACT: http://criminaljustice.state.ny.us/ops/sgtraining/index.htm

least is his affirmation of the "re-doing certification" associated
with security Training Schools. He states that after paying for over priced
certification one would end up repeating the process. The only time a candidate
would have to redo certification would be if the school was not registered with

So you find an ad on craigslist or in a news paper saying that there are Security Guard Positions opened to be filled immediately.
