I was an employee of 24 Hour Fitness in the year of 2008. I had been with the company for six months. In the five months of employment I endured mistreatment by club management, and a fellow co-worker. I attempted numerous times to address the concern directly with management. Those efforts went no wheres. I than resorted to calling the companies complaint hotline. My concerns were never addressed nor were did I ever receive a return call by executive management to investigate the issue.

In September 2008, I received a phone call by lost prevention management notifying me that I was being layed off. However, an hour later I received a phone call by the same individual, stating that he would have to rescind on his original statement, and that the company had placed me under investigation. This manager was very direspectful and demanding of me. I refused to cooperate with him after he was reluctant to discuss what the investigation was in regards to.

I called several clubs to investigate who this manager was. I finally found an assistant manager who was knowledgeable with whom this person was, and he informed me that my employment with the company was going to end in termination. I was already in the process of resigning as I was to return to college, and would not have time to consume with a company that I was unhappy with. I than went to my club, and gave my verbal resignation. The LP manager was informed by the club manager of my decision to resign, and he decided to call me and leave a message stating that 24 Hour Fitness had placed me under administrative leave pending the investigation; I was prohibited from entering any of the clubs in the mean time.

Long story short. 24 Hour Fitness filed a criminal report with the OC Sheriffs for theft of a $3 soft drink. I was investigated and three weeks later recieved a phone call from the investigator stating that the District Attorney denied the case and requested that the case be closed.

24 Hour Fitness specifically Gina Baxter- Director of Human Resources/ Southwest Division, decided that she would permenantly revoke my club membership despite the fact, that I was never found guilty of any wrong doing by the local authorities.

Mind you that I had re-purchased another club membership following the investigation at another club, which required that the club manager and the human resource manager investigate and get an approval prior to opening up the new membership. I have been unjustly targeted and retaliated against by 24 hour fitness and those in upper management, for unproven allegations made against my integrity, and personal credibility.

I would not recommend this company to any individual seeking employment. The comapany is well known for their unfair, and unethical business practices towards their employees and club members. I have personally witnessed and experienced the corruption that is within the companys confines.

I don't see it.

You have the OP who just seems to sneek in the report that they were accused of stealing a $3 drink.  They didn't defend it just to say that the DA didn't pursue it.  What is interesting is that in most cases of employee theft, the employeer just fires the employee.  For them to actually file a report with the OC Sheriff seems as if there is something more going on.  Because if they file a false report the individual who did this could be in some very serious trouble.  Yet after all of this, even though they feel that the company is unfair, unethical to employees and members they still go to another club and want to be a member.

The second one seems to be a case where they had bad interviews, had managers that they didn't think they knew what they were doing yet they still wanted to work for them?

So why if this place is such a big RipOff does one person still want to be a member, and another that still wants to work for them?

Get an attorney.  If what you are telling is true, you have a lawsuit for "hostile workplace".  When you complain and nothing is done, you have a strong case. Hopefully you kept records.  If so, you have a 80% chance of winning a minimum of one years' income, plus court/attorney costs.  Chances are they will settle out of court rather than have bad press when their business practices are made public. I know since I was in HR in another company for five years.


This is a letter to the CEO Carl Liebert III I sent when they pulled one on me:

Dear Mr. Liebert,

Being CEO of a large organization you have a belief that you need to know what how the people perform within the company you work and represent. The research I have performed on 24 Hour Fitness USA indicates a management that takes an active role in the performance of the company, which of course leads to a more profitable company. However, I found that may be otherwise. Here are my experiences:

Last April I was called for an interview at Club 150 in Irvine, CA to meet with the club manager. I arrived on time, and found out the manger was not there at the appointed time and would not be returning. I had an interview with another employee who was asked to perform the task. He had never had done an interview before and he didnt ask any questions or conduct anything that would be considered an interview. While this was going on, I noticed a female employee wearing high heels standing on a secretarial chair, the one with wheels and rotates, reaching for something on a high shelf. I thought I was going to witness someone getting severely injured but fortunately she did not fall. A few days later I received an email from the manager stating that I wasnt what he was looking for. He never met me, nor was an interview performed. I called the 24 Hour Fitness Human Resources department and spoke to Kimberly Haller. She apologized for the situation.

At the end of July I was contacted by two stores, the Lakeshore location, number 189 and Lake Forest, number 073. In the morning I arrived at the appointed time at Lakeshore to have an interview with the manager Preston Jeppson, but he was busy. He asked me to have an interview with the membership manager who was having his last day at the Lakeshore location. It was an excellent interview and he forwarded my information to the club manager, Mr. Jeppson. Later that day I had an interview with Jon Lobichusky, the service manager at Lake Forest. He liked the results of the interview so much that he had the club manager Randy Allen interview me immediately. He wanted to hire me on the spot but he wanted to wait for the results from Lakeshore since they interviewed me first. At the same time I was introduced to Rico Garza, who was transferring to Lakeshore.

On August 3rd I arrived at the appointed time to have an interview with Preston Jeppson. Mr. Jeppson could not make the appointment that was made the previous Friday, July 30th because he was busy (this is the second time he missed the appointment) so I had an interview with Rico Garza. He expressed that I was an excellent fit and wanted to talk to Mr. Jeppson. He asked me to call him at 1:00 pm that day. At 1:00 I called Mr. Garza and was only able to leave a voice mail on his private line. I called at 2:00 and left another one. At 3:00 I called the main number and had him paged. Mr. Garza came on the line and said he was busy and had not spoken to Mr. Jeppson. Later that day I called Randy Allen at Lake Forest and he told me that he and Mr. Jeppson had spoken and that I was going to work at Lakeshore. The next day I called the Lakeshore location and Mr. Jeppson tells me that someone came in from another location and so I am passing on you. OK, then, I called Mr. Allen and he was busy, so I left a message. I never had an interview with Mr. Jeppson. I stopped by the Lake Forest location 45 minutes later and found that Mr. Allen had left a few minutes before I arrived. He never returned the phone call.

 I showed up at Lake Forest location on August 6th at about 10:30 A.M. and Jon Lobichusky was excited that I was there to become a team member. Mr. Allen was there also and he saw me. I completed the online application, read the employee handbook, was given a shirt (which I still have in my possession) and told by Mr. Allen to be back on Tuesday morning for my first day of employee training. That was 11:30 A.M. About 3:30 I get a call from Jon Lobichusky and was told they hired too many people and was unhired. I was told that the Laguna Hills branch may need someone. Jon Lobichusky offered to call, which he never did. I called the Laguna Hills location later to follow up and left a message because Tim Hutchings, the club manager, was busy. Mr. Hutchings never returned the call. I contacted Kimberly Haller in HR and notified her of what was going on. She bumped it up to her supervisor.

The next day, Friday August 7th, I followed up with Kimberly Haller and was I was told her supervisor would be calling. I received a phone call from him and was told I was not a fit because they use a soft sell technique. What I dont understand here is firstly, two locations wanted me because of my soft sell technique. That is how I do it. Secondly, two locations wanted me as a team member because of my selling effectiveness, extensive experience and also I look the part. I have been lifting for 25 years. The supervisor never met me or ever spoke to me before then. He had no information; he was making up an excuse.

Mr. Liebert, I read the employee handbook and it says all employees are to work ethically and tell the truth. 24 Hour Fitness even has a special service for employees to report unethical or illegal behavior. Unfortunately, the three times I have had contact with store management has been far less than that. I have seen and experienced a no-show manager, a workers comp disaster ready to happen, store management that does not communicate, keep appointments and is not ethical. Even the HR supervisor was unethical, speaking of things he did not know and making up a story to cover for the far less than stellar behavior of the managers.

I know as a result of this I will probably not be considered a candidate for 24 Hour Fitness. However, if you do need someone who is ethical, experienced, and knows how to run profitable organization, please let me know. I have a shirt already.


As you see here, Tim Hutchings turns up twice in controversy, and other managers play the same game.  This is obviously in 24 Hour Fitness's culture. By the way, I still have not received a reply for Mr. Liebert.
