As someone who has likely never been around the trucking industry, I would imagine you know little about how trucks are weighed and such. I would recommend the following steps if you decide to move again in the future or for anyone else that is considering a move. The moving company may not like it but find someone else if they refuse.

1. Do a little homework and find where the closest truck stop is to you with a certified scale. These are 75-80 foot platforms in the parking lot, usually with an overhad sign going across the platform. CAT Scales are what I recommend and most large chain type truck stops have them. In Orange County, Ca it woud have been the T/A truckstops in Ontario.

2. On th day of the move either request they meet you at the truck stop to have their truck weighed BEFORE going on to load your property, or request that they arrive with a certified weight ticket showing their trucks weight before they begin loading. I would recommend the former so you KNOW it is a weigh ticket reflecting the weight immediately before they arrived at your house.

3. When they are finished loading your property, take the time to follow or meet them at the same truck stop to again have their truck weighed.

These weigh tickets are ALWAYS printed with two copies. Insure you take one copy from both the pre-load (empty weight) and the post-load (loaded weight) tickets for your own records. The difference between the weights are, obviously, the exact weight of your property. Give or take a little for fuel they may have burned driving back and forth. The scales at major truck stops are legally certified by the state and calibrated for accuracy regularly. These tickets....particularly for CAT scales hold up in court in cases where a state weigh station says a truck is heavier than the certified truck stop weight says, so it should be more than sufficient for your purposes with a moving truck.

Don't ever 'take their word for it' or allow them to tell you what your property weighs. Following the above steps will be a pain and take additional time but it's the only way to have absolute documented proof of the weight of your property in a dispute with a moving company.

Again.... Some moving companies may refuse to do this, and I'd guess none of them will like it but INSIST on it. If they won't comply with this fairly simple and fair request, you have reason to worry about it and find another company that doesn't have anything to hide.
