I had two accounts with A T & T: my daughter and I shared minutes on one account and my son had a newer type phone on the second account. The account for my daughter and I had long expired after my initial 2 year agreement. I never signed an additional agreement, although I had been asked if I wanted to do so, and my son's account was to expire on July 31, 2004. In fact, I went to a local AT & T store to confirm that I did not have a current "lock in" contract and my son's contract expired at the end of July 2004. Due to the seemingly increasing costs, we decided to switch to another wireless provider after my son's contract date expired. We obtained new service through SureWest Wireless during the last week of July 2004 and SureWest did not switch my son's number over until August 1st so as not to incur the early termination fees. The final statements from AT & T were clearly an attempt by AT & T to "punish" us by going to another wireless company. Not only did they invent charges (there are several rows of 1 minute calls, to the same number, one after another, obviously to use up the free minutes so they could begin charging for minutes), but EACH account was charged exhorbitant early termination fees. After several calls to AT & T to try to clear this up, only to be told each time, "Those are valid charges", I gave up. I continue to receive mail from them and one account has been turned over to a collection agency. I am filing a complaint with the California Public Utilities Commission and I am making a statement regarding this on each of the credit reporting bureaus.

If anyone has any other ideas, I'm all ears.
