AARP Health policy canceled in Jan 2012, but AARP wants 1 yr of payments through 2013 Nationwide

In January of 2012 my wife cancelled her part D Medicare coverage with AARP. In February of 2014 she started receiving phone calls from ARRP stating that she owed payments for the entire year of 2013 even though she never used the insurance. The person stated she owed $1100 dollors and if she refused to pay, they would ruin our credit by sending us to collections.

When she first started this insurance, the AARP representative stated that if she missed a payment that the plan would automatically be cancelled. She cancelled the plan and made no further payments. She never sent in a claim after she cancelled. What kind of scam are they running. We will never pay AARP for services cancelled and not rendered.
