My truck broke down on the road on a cold day. I thought no problem. I recently bought the Access Roadside Assistance from wagjag or one of those group buy sites. The fee was $35 for the membership which was to cover at the very minimum the tow. I phoned the number on the membership card that I received in the mail. I guy answered the phone. I tell him I need a tow, and then his questioning me started: "What is wrong with the truck?" I told him it broke down in a driveway. Then, "How far do you have to go?" I told him around 5 kilometers. "Who owns the truck?" and "are the owner of the card?" "What year is the truck?" He asked me every possible question. I then said that I needed a tow as my truck has broken down. Can you help me? He said: "I'm just trying to establish if you are valid for a tow." I said it sounds like you are trying to avoid this tow altogether. He said: "I am the owner of the company and I am trying to get a feel for my customers. You are lucky to talk to me. This is a great opportunity since you are talking to the owner of the company." At a whim, rather than provide me with a tow, he offered me a full refund for my membership. I said: "would it not be better if you just towed me to the garage since this is the service that I paid for". He said: "I will do something better for you. This is a great opportunity for you. Talking to the owner, I will print out a cheque and I will send it to you right away". I again told him that I just thought that he would provide me with roadside assistance as stated in my membership and I don't understand why you just won't send a tow truck here after I answered all of your questions, which I qualified for a valid tow. He did not give me any valid reasons on why he did not want to tow me, but all he did was offer me a full refund which was in his explanation, a great opportunity for me to accept. He basically ended the conversation and that was it. When the conversation ended, I was dumbstruck on the whole situation that occurred.

Obviously he sells these memberships, hoping that no customers will be calling for assistance, and when they do, rather than provide the service promised, he tries to find any loop hole possible on why he cannot tow and instead, wants to refund your membership... as what seems to be a last resort (or hang up the phone since you think you are not eligible). I guess he figures that the tow costs more than the $35 paid for the membership, so if you insist, he will reimburse you. He sells these memberships hoping that you do not need any service, and when you do, he does not provide it...

AUTHOR: Access Roadside Customer Support - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 15, 2015

We ask all of our members the same standard questions at the beginning of the call to establish that they are indeed the person on file with our company. Roadside assistance is assurance against break down but does not mean automatic assistance for anything or everything. When you purchase house insurance the insurer is betting you never have an issue.

Same with roadside assistance, we are trying to establish that your problem is a new issue and not due to neglect of regular maintenance or a reoccurring issue. Unfortunately if our operators/supervisors are not satisfied with the reasons for assistance or the call details do not fit within our guidelines the services may be denied. These are explained at the time the call is placed as well these are available on our web site and written in the “Policies/Procedures booklet that all members receive. We are sorry that you feel that you were treated unfairly. We are always willing to help. It’s what we do!
