ACTIVE PERIODICALS ripoff CHARGED FOR MAGAZINES BUT UNREACHABLE TO DISCONTINUE DEERFIELD BEACH Florida

Received telephone call stating I was in the next level of drawing to be a sweepstakes winner. I was entitled to a free watch and some free magazines. All I was required to do was purchase a weekly magazine for 4 years.

I questioned several times how I could be sure this was a legitimate offer and was assured that it was and that if I was unsatisfied, all I had to do was call by credit care company and request that the charge be removed. The woman also assured me that the company had been in business for years and would never be involved in anything that would defraud someone.

Upon receiving my confirmation and certificate to fill out to receive my free watch, I called the toll free number on the letter. In order to obtain my watch they wanted my SS# which I would not give out. When I called the number there was no answer.

I then called my credit card company to discontinue any further charges. I was told that because it was a re-occurring charge they could not cancel it until I had contacted the company. I explained that I had tried but there was no answer. The credit card company tried to call and was also unsuccessful.

I was then told that I should try again on a regular business day (Monday) and if I was still unsuccessful I should call the credit card company again and put the charge under dispute. I also looked the company up on the internet and found that several other people had experienced the same problems.
