AFNI is a scavenger collection agency that purchases uncollected debt from business, then uses unfair and illegal methods in their attempts to collect these debts.

AFNI caused notices of unpaid debt to my credit report, although this company never contacted me about the alleged debt. I was able to trace the original owner of this debt to NEXTEL corporation where I discovered:

The SSN of the alleged debtor was not my SSN.

The billing addresses for the debtor was at residences where I had never resided.

The debt was for an account closed in January 2005, thus it an expired account under the California Statue of limitations, and not collectible.

In my initial conversations with ANFI, their employees were very agressive and coercive.

However, the same day I filed a complaint with the California Department of Consumer affairs, ANFI  emailed me a letter stating:

"This letter is to inform you that this account has been closed. Afni Inc. will take no further action. In addition, if this account has been subject to credit reporting, the credit reporting agencies will be directed to remove this account from your credit record"

Lesson learned: Make sure that the debt is infact a legitimate debt before paying these scam artists anything.  Complain to your state consumer affairs office if they violate fair business practices or legal statues. If you determine that you are legally liable for the debt, then negotiate with the collection agency, there is a good chance that they will settle the debt for 25%-%0% of the amount owed.
