I found AIU while looking for grants for my daughter to help with the college she is going to. I put my name and address on this particular web site, and I guess it sent my name out to different on line schools. Anyhow, AIU calls me and I talk to an advisor, who goes through the spiel about getting more money and a better paying job to support my family (I dont work, my husband makes more than enough for the family). I am happy to hear about the getting a degree quicker than normal, and the fact that I dont have to leave my house.
I go to the website, fill out the application, and wait for the call from the advisor. Which comes right on time.
To make along story short, I was accepted and sent to the financial aide advisior. I have to tell you that she was the rudest person I have ever spoken to. All she cared about where the money was going to come from, and how fast that I could get it to them. I kept asking them questions, like "What would happen if I didnt get enough money to cover all of the classes? Would my enrollment end? I wouldnt be able to take the classes, right?" but neither she or the first person I talked to would give me a straight answer.
Finally I decided that this wasnt the right school for me. I didnt like the pressuring for money aspect at all. Especially right after the financial advisor told me that I needed to go "door to door" and get donations from all of my neighbors in order to meet my financial needs for college, or have a garage sale and get money that way. I am NOT going to burden my neighbors for school tuition.
The calls kept coming, all day and up until 11 pm at night. I wouldnt answer them, or would let the machine pick up, or just pick up the receiver and put it back down. Finally my husband told them that he had kicked me out of the house and had no knowledge of where I was. They havent called since.
I am one of the lucky ones that didnt get too far into the financial business of this particular on line school.

Alternative on-line programs

For those that are discourage by the complaints against online schools and the seemingly outrageous tuition costs they justify in the name of convenience, I sympathize. But pick your head up because you may have a satisfying alternative.
WGU (http://www.wgu.edu) is a non-profit online school that is accredited both regionally and nationally. The tuition cost is a fraction of what other on-lines demand. As a student (not staff) I have found the school has it faults and frustrations, but nothing that says I should cut and run. One thing that may cause a problem for those needing a complete online program is how they conduct assessments, so ask them how it works.
Another option for those that are not looking for an accelerated degree path is check on university programs offered from diffenent states. You CAN find traditional universities that offer complete on-line programs! You may find that non-resident tuition is still more cost effective than a private on-line.
Good luck and God bless.
