I started collage at AIU online September of 2005. In March of 2006 I found out that I was going to be having surgery in May and that I would be unable to do anything but lay there for about 3-6 weeks.

Knowing this, I started trying to contact my councelor to see about a leave of absence in order to recover from surgery. I tried emails, phone calls at least 3 times a week. And still I heard nothing. On may 10th (2 days before my surgery) She finally calls me.

I advised her that I needed a leave of absence. She tells me I am in the middle of 2 classes and that it was too late for that. She then tells me my only options are to drop out temporarely or just take the incomplete grade in both classes and the next 2 classes I would start 2 weeks after surgery. I advised I would not take the incomplete grade, and that if she had called me sooner I would not be going through either one. She denied any such contact attempts.

On May 15th I received a call from an AIU Representive (who's name fails me at this point because he treated me so badly I said mean things and hung up on him). This representative advised me I now owed them $2076 for the two classes I had just dropped out of 5 days before.

I advised him that I was not well and that I had just had surgery on Friday and that because of this I wasn't even working and had no money to send them. I also asked if he could call me in a couple weeks and allow me to heal a little before he started pushing me into stress mode.

The man got rude when I asked him if he had $2000, because I could not pull that out of my (bad word here. sorry I was in pain). he sated "Yes, actually I do. But we are not talking about me right now, we are talking about you."

I couldn't believe it! I said some VERY nasty things to him, hung up, calmed down for about 10 minutes and called to speak to his supervisor (who never called me back BTW).

3 days later, I get a call from a collections agency. Now my credit is shot, I am 29 years old with a family and working as a housekeeper making min wage. It was hard to get back into college and no one will help me with a loan because of AIU, I am having to apply for every grant on the planet now just to try and make a life for me and my kids.

Any questions, send me an email. Just make sure you tell me what it is about in the subject line. I will respond!
