I was referred to and hired AJ Johnson Painting to do the following: Paint the interior of my home, move a washer/dryer up from the basement into main bathroom, close off two closet openings, remove the doors four closets and finish off those openings, remodel a small standing shower in the Master Bathroom into a full-size tiled shower, and repair leaking pipes under all of the bathroom sinks. The construction work was abandoned and never properly completed by Mr. Johnson's company, or the sub-contractor he hired, and he is refusing to repair/redo the work or hire someone else to complete/repair the work his company was contracted to finish. The contract payment agreed to was just shy of $10,700; 1/2 of which Mr. Johnson received up front before starting his work.

The only portion of the job completed in full without cutting corners was the painting. Otherwise, every other project was only 80% completed. The contractors did not repair the walls properly where they took down hanging bars or opened up the closets (there are a few areas where bars were located previously that were not properly puttied and sanded down so that the area was flush and the old opening/holes could not be seen). The contractor did not repair the flooring where door jams were removed and walls opened up for the closets. They did not make certain that the wall and flooring where they created the new space for the washer/dryer area relocated from the basement to the upstairs main bathroom was completely finished off. They did not stain any of the "newly" installed baseboards the same color as the rest of the trim in the house. They did not make certain that the newly remodeled shower in the Master Bedroom was sealed properly, that it drained properly, that the water ran properly (hot and cold, or had proper flow and pressure). They did not install a separation wall (to make a partial wall separating the shower from the toilet area) as requested, but instead installed bullnose along the seat area for the "time being" (the contractor stated they would finish the work per my request but never did). The contractor did not leave an access panel to the shut off valves for the remodeled shower in the Master bathroom. And then some...

I was physically assaulted during the course of the repairs. During this time Dennis Johnson requested the final portion of the funds, I was so upset and anxious from the other situation that had occurred that without checking the work I wrote them a check for $6000. The final check included slightly $300 more than the original contract price I agreed to  because I requested help installing a light in the downstairs den area (which was never installed) and replacing a broken spicket head after the initial bid. Again, the original contract price agreed to was just shy of $10, 700 - and Mr. Johnson received $11000 total; I have a copy of both deposited checks on hand.  Furthermore, Mr. Johnson requested a copy of the bid sheet because, according to him, he did not have one. I brought my copy to Mr. Johnson and left it on my kitchen counter for his review, along with a the last check I wrote to cover the painting and construction costs. Shortly after providing Mr. Johnson both items his subcontractor "quit because they had a disagreement" (Dennis Johnson's words to me) and Mr. Johnson stated that he had to get started on another job he had lined up, but he would be coming back and forth to finish the work needed; this has yet to happen and the last day the contractor was at my house was 9 April.

They took my copy of the bid sheet, my money, and left me with work I cannot complete on my own. I have tried to contact them on several occasions to no avail. I have seen the contractor twice at my church, and both times he said he would call me, come over, and finish or fix the issues at hand; yet, I have not heard from them directly regarding how or when the work that was left incomplete will be completed, or how the work that didn't hold up will be repaired

I attempted to contact Dennis Johnson, the owner, about fixing the work which was left incomplete, as well as fixing the work that had begin falling apart shortly after the day he left my home on April 9th (leaving the key behind signaling that he would not be returning). I have continued to attempt to contact him a few times every couple weeks since then, via phone call and text him (on the phone number I have for him while he was working at my home). I have attempted to contact him via Facebook private message, I attempted to reach him through the Better Business Bureau, & I reached out to my pastor to attempt to make an appointment to meet with Mr. Johnson ( has he and his wife occasionally attend the church where I am a member. Mr. Johnson hasn't made no effort to respond to my inquiries or remedy the issues which are outstanding.

I strongly suggest that nobody uses this company as they are crooked people.

My Paint Job was Great, Framing Contractor was Not

AUTHOR: Dennis - (United States)

POSTED: Monday, September 03, 2018

This review was based on the work by my subcontractor who had done the non-painting work. I contacted him multiple times and he refused to return. I agree that his work was bad but it looks bad on my business.

I apologize for the bad work, however I am not a framing contractor and would not have been able to fix the problems.

That contractor no longer works for me. I have not contracted him since.
