My husband and I engaged All My Sons Moving and Storage of Savage, MD on March 31st 2004. We were provided a lump-sum price of $1300 for the move. We were moving from a tiny 900-square foot Cape Cod home, and packed all boxes and clearly labeled them so that the movers could deposit them into the corresponding rooms upon our arrival at the new home. Many of the rooms in our home were completely emptied and most boxes were staged in our living room, which has immediate access to our front door. Most heavy furniture was moved from upstairs by my husband and me so that the move could go quickly.

When the movers arrived, they presented me with several documents to sign, many with fine print, including a Bill of Lading and Freight Bill #28893, showing instead an hourly rate of $114.00 per hour and then an overtime rate of $171.00. When I questioned the foreman in charge about the overtime rate, he repeatedly assured me that the move would go quickly and if $1300 was quoted to us (All My Sons Moving never quoted us an hourly rate and certainly never mentioned the overtime rate in the three phone conversations I had with them), then that's what we'll pay. He commented several times how well prepared we were for the move. We were very confident that the move would go quickly, since our neighbor recently moved into a large 3000 square foot home next door and the move took less than four hours. They clearly had more boxes than we. Furthermore, we had no choice but to use All My Sons Moving & Storage, since we had no time left to research alternative moving companies and we needed to vacate our house by early evening so that we could clean it for new occupants moving in the next day.

They also insisted that we sign paperwork stating that if we took All My Sons Moving and Storage to court and lost our case, that we would be responsible for paying their court costs. They also left behind a paper on litigation in general - great way to start off on what would become a really bad foot.

There were three movers (including the foreman) assigned to our move. The two others were young boys who readily admitted to me personally that they did not like their job (both boys seemed to be related to the foreman and clearly were inexperienced). I found them frequently sitting down, taking breaks and I felt they were moving very, very slowly when they were working. One of the boys was so obese, he became frequently short of breath. My husband and I began to assist the movers, hoping to pick up the pace, but the foreman confronted me and asked us to stop, stating that there were legal implications if we got hurt, etc. We helplessly watched the movers continue to sit down, take breaks and have casual conversation while the clock was ticking. When I again began to pick up boxes to bring them outside, the foreman asked me to stop, saying that I was making him feel like they weren't doing their job.

I then made a deal with the foreman, saying that there was a handsome tip in it for them if they moved us by 4 PM. The foreman said he would tell the other movers. Ironically, the pace of the move slowed down even further at that point.

When we finally arrived at our new home, the two younger movers stopped working altogether. Instead, they began to play darts in our garage. When I complained again to the foreman, he asked them to help, but they simply unloaded boxes from the moving truck into our garage at that point. This meant that several well-marked boxes, meant to be delivered elsewhere in the house, simply got dumped in the garage area. (It took us weeks to sort through it all since there were also several other boxes deposited into the wrong rooms in the house.)

It was 9:30 PM when all the boxes were completely unloaded off the moving truck. At 9:00 PM, with about a dozen boxes and our sofa left on the truck, the foreman said he needed my credit card to process the moving charges and then got on the phone with his office dispatcher. When he told me the total charges would come to $2019.32, I was livid! When I asked the foreman about the $1300 quote and his reassurances, he denied any such guarantee and instead blamed the office staff for not being forthcoming with me when I first negotiated the move. The foreman told me, this happens all the time and feigned sympathy for me. Of course, if I did not agree to pay them, All My Sons Moving still had several boxes and our sofa on the truck and could simply drive off without unloading them. I felt completely backed into a corner and had no choice at that point they had us over a barrel and I felt we were given the old bait and switch and I told them so.

When the foreman was preparing to leave our home, he had the nerve to ask us about the tip I mentioned to him I was completely dumfounded at that point. I told him that I could not believe he had the nerve to ask for a tip when we had a deal for them to get us moved by 4 PM. I did not pay them the tip and they drove off very angry at us, shouting expletives back at my husband and me as they tore out of our driveway.

They next day I attempted to stop the payment through my bank but was unsuccessful.

Subsequent to the move, I contacted All My Sons Moving & Storage on April 2nd to provide an account of our experience to a Regla Carrington, office manager at their Savage, MD headquarters. She was extremely unapologetic and only offered to reimburse us $419.32 for our inconvenience for the misplaced boxes in the garage area, but not before signing a letter stating that I made the settlement in good faith and without duress; that the acceptance of the settlement is an acknowledgement of my complete satisfaction and that by signing the letter, I will consider any matters or issues relative to the transaction to be totally adjusted and to my complete satisfaction.

I have made several subsequent attempts to follow up with All My Sons Moving & Storage, since I do not feel the $419.32 is nearly enough restitution, and that I felt uncomfortable signing a letter that I did not agree with but they refuse to do anything more for us.

Frankly, this is a company that should be put out of business. I felt we were used and that their methods of doing business are a complete sham. I am considering taking legal action against them. In the meantime, everyone in the Maryland/DC/Virginia area please beware of this company and DO NOT use them.

sickofyouwhining is wrong on many points

AUTHOR: Donald - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, May 29, 2008

I have owned a moving company for over 40 years. I am embarrassed by some of the thing I read here. This lady has every right to still be upset by these people's actions or, rather, lack of same. I would have fired all three of these slobs. The young ones for slacking and the foreman for allowing it. Sickofyourwhing states that movers are tantamount to fly by night people. Completely untrue. I have had some of my men for twelve to fifteen years because I treat them right because they treat the costumer with respect and simply do their job. Granted, it isn't brain surgery but neither is it "pick up sticks". The last people I would call is the BBB. They exist because companies such as this mover pays to join. The people to contact is the Attorney General's office, Consumer Service.

Get over it

AUTHOR: Sickoyourwhining - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, May 08, 2008

Really? You were so abused and mistreated that two years later, you're still whiny over the horror of it all?

Wow. I'd hate to see the state you'd be in if a REAL tragedy hit you. I half expected another four year anniversary of "still mad as hell!!!"

I know this site exists for consumers to help and commiserate with each other, but it also exists for needed wake-up calls, which I will deliver in list-style, for your convenience:

1) Movers typically are not educated people who eat strictly vegetarian diets and practice meditation daily. Its not a glorified position, but more often than not they are hard-working, friendly, and selfless. Unfortunately, your crew was nothing of the sort (obviously).
2) A moving company's team of movers changes frequently, as moving isn't a job with much stability. Managers are frequently hiring new movers who are thoroughly screened. However, there is no screening for laziness, and few people will list such as a quality of theirs during their interview.
3) Seeing this, the moving company has offered you a lot more than they've offered most people in retributions. But OH NO, your precious, delicate pride can't take the idea of an apology that falls short of groveling at your oh-so-anointed feet, so you hold on to this grudge (I bet you're a Cancer sign) for YEARS, as if you have nothing better to do. Do you?

I understand not wanting to take the offer because you don't want to sign anything saying you're completely satisfied, which you very well shouldn't be. But refuse and leave it at that. Acting like a 3 year old and throwing a 2-year tantrum SHOULD be beneath you. Sadly, it doesn't seem so.

I was also ripped off by All My Sons!

AUTHOR: Michael - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, April 13, 2006

I actually just stumbled across this website because I came across my old contract from All My Sons. I wish I had found it several years ago.

This horrible excuse for a company moved my family's belongings from Washington, D.C. to McLean, Va. in December 2002. Not only did they damage several pieces of furniture, but All My Sons LOST (yes, lost) one of our boxes with extremely important items inside.

While I can understandproblems occurring during a move, I never expected for this company to actually lose an entire box. The worst part of the entire experience was that the company was *extremely* unhelpful when I presented them with the problem. They kept telling me they would look for the missing box in their warehouse and then get back to me, but never did after repeated calls from me.

When I finally did speak to Regla regarding the matter, she offered me, as is the company's policy, something based on the weight of the box. The compensation equated to about $40, when the actual value of the items inside was closer to $400.

USE THIS COMPANY AT YOU OWN PERIL.

I would never use them again and have told everyone I know not to use them as well. I'm glad I now have somewhere to point people so they know just how bad this company really is.

Two Years Later and Still Mad As Hell !!!!!!!!!!!

AUTHOR: Laurie - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, March 19, 2006

Two years have gone by since my husband and I were totally RIPPED OFF by All My Sons Moving and Storage of Savage, MD.

In that time, we've spotted their moving trucks in our area and have approached the poor unsuspecting homeowners to forewarn them that they might get ripped off.

I'm planning to contact the Maryland Attorney General next. The Better Business Bureau did nothing - so LAME.

But I've previously had great responsiveness from the Attorney General. Hopefully this will lead to A-C-T-I-O-N for the poor, unsuspecting and innocent consumers who think the "All My Sons" ad looks trustworthy enough for them to actually use them.

I only wish I had encountered this website sooner.

Let's see.......

AUTHOR: Patrick - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, August 23, 2004

Hmm, let's see......

900 sq ft, items already boxed and labeled, heavy furniture already downstairs ready to go....

I could have done this move in 4 hours by myself.

It seems that there is a disturbing trend in the moving business these days. You're given an estimate based on the size of your current residence, locations from and to, labor hours, etc. Then 95% of the time, the moving company states that they need double, sometimes triple, the original amount quoted. They do this when they still have some or all of your personal belongings on their truck or in their warehouse (and let's not even get into the storage fees).

So what choice do we consumers have but to give in to the demands of the big bad moving company? We want our stuff back, right? I personally will never use one. I still prefer to do it by myself, with the help of family and friends whom I can trust.

Lori, file reports with as many agencies as possible. Don't let them get away with this.

Regla, by the way, go search this website for "All My Sons". You will find 9 entries of complaints, 3 of which are for Savage, MD.

My 2 cents.

I know how long this job should take

AUTHOR: Albert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, August 23, 2004

I own a company that does estate liquidations, and we are always removing entire contents of homes from start to finish. With 10 years experience, I can assure you that a 900 square foot home with mostly all the small items already packed in boxes, it would have taken us no more than one and a half hours to clear out the entire home, and we usually show up with only 2 people.

It would take about the same time to unload and bring into the new house. These movers should be ashamed of themselves to call themselves "movers", and they give reputable movers a bad name. This job should have taken no more than 4 hours, and should have cost no more than $600.

It's a shame we have to live in a world surrounded by people with no concience, and whose only priority is to make a buck, whether they deserve it, or not.

"Milk[ing] the contract" is right

AUTHOR: L - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, August 23, 2004

Darren from Wisconsin is right on the money when he said in his rebuttal (above), "3 movers for a small household should be able to move within 4 or 5 hours (including the drive as beyond the 4 hours of actully moving stuff into and out of the truck)."

He went on to say, "I can't remember a mover taking more than 2 hours to move mine or anyone else's households. Maybe this is because they were on flat rate and there wasn't a need to "milk" the contract."

"Milk the contract" is exactly what the "All My Sons" moving company of Savage, MD did. I am sure this is highly illegal and as I said previously, what this amounts to is STEALING. Under these shady circumstances, there are NO incentives for movers to work quickly when they know the slower they move, the more they will get paid.

POSTED: Thursday, August 05, 2004

Regla,

I, for one, appreciate your offer to change the amount to the one quoted by another company as a way to remedy this situation.

However, I don't think that the issue is so much who said what over the hourly vs. flat rate. It has more to do with should the movers been able to move the household within the 4 hours? There didn't seem to be a disagreement between you and the poster concerning the amount of stuff to move.

3 movers for a small household should be able to move within 4 or 5 hours (including the drive as beyond the 4 hours of actully moving stuff into and out of the truck). Is there a measured tonnage of the goods? Can you compare that against a standard to see if they were working as hard as you would expect from your employees?

I moved all over the world while in the USAF (5 times in 10 years) and we always joked that you needed to tie yourself down when the movers came because they moved so fast they would bowl you over! We weren't even allowed to do any packing because they were supposed to do it. I can't remember a mover taking more than 2 hours to move mine or anyone else's households.

Maybe this is because they were on flat rate and there wasn't a need to "milk" the contract. They made more by moving more households... not on how long it took to move. I can understand that a flat rate requires someone to come in and estimate.

If we look at the issue of the house should have been moved in the allotted time if the movers did their job, then I don't think that the hourly versus flat rate would have come up.

Thanks,

To reiterate my point, Mrs. L received the hourly rates on the phone, was confirmed by our confirmation department with the hourly rates and upon arrival the crew presented Mrs. L. her moving contract, in which she signed with the hourly rates.

We do not give a flat rate or a not to exceed price for any move over the telephone. We only give the hourly rates and may give an approximate based on the information provided to us by the customer however they are charged based on the actual amount of time used to complete the move.

We agreed to match a price given to Mrs. L. by another mover for customer satisfaction purposes (which Mrs. L had agreed to on the telephone) and this offer is still available.

Again, I apologize for any inconveniences Mrs. L. may have experienced. Once we receive our agreeement we will issue the refund of $419.32 back to her credit card.

Incorrect Rebuttal and Missing the Point Entirely

AUTHOR: Lori - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 21, 2004

I've read the All My Son's Moving and Storage rebuttal to my complaint.

At no time was an hourly rate discussed with me when I first negotiated this move. In response to this when I was arguing the point with the foreman when it came time to collect, he said "this happens all the time." My husband was privy to all conversations and completely backs me on this. This is a deceptive marketing practice, which is substantiated through previous complaints about the same company in Savage, MD.

The point that is missed entirely, is the nature in which the move was managed. The movers were dragging their feet to move us out of our home. They took three times as long as any other able-bodied person moving at a reasonable pace could take to move. This is STEALING and should be examined by the authorities.

Their unapologetic tone with me and the previous customer who complained on this same board indicates that they are happy to get away with their behavior.

What they are currently offering to settle this matter is completely unacceptable. I was quoted $1300 - PERIOD. I will continue to publicize our poor experience about this company until proper restitution is made for their shameful behavior.

This customer called on 03/20/04 to inquire about our moving rates for a move within Annapolis, Md on 3/31/04. She was quoted the hourly rate from start to finish plus 1 hour for travel time with a 4 hour minimum. Based on the information she provided she was given an approximate cost of $1333 for her moving services but was told she would be charged the actual amount of time the move would take.

AT NO POINT WAS SHE GIVEN A FLAT/BINDING PRICE FOR THE MOVE. We can provide a flat/binding price for any move however an estimator would do a visual inspection of the home at least 30 days prior to the move. The customer would receive the flat/binding price in writing from the estimator.

On 3/29/04 my confirmation office called Mrs. L to confirm her move. We did verify the addresses she was moving from and to, the price per hour along with the overtime rates after 8 hours, the 4 hour minimum and also terms of payment.

On 3/31/04 the crew arrived at Mrs. L address and provided her with the Freight Bill of Lading in which she signed prior to the move. She did not contact the office with any questions, concerns or complaints before or during her move.

On April 2, 2004 she did contact me to state she was not satisfied with the cost of her move. She stated she did recieve other estimates from other movers in which they estimated the cost to be $1600.

I apologize for any inconveniences she had experienced and explained she was not given a flat price for the move, she was charged from start to finish plus 1 hour for travel time however for customer satisfaction purposes we would match the price of $1600 and I will send her a release agreement that would need to be signed and returned to the office and a credit can be issued to her credit card.

Mrs. L. agreed to the offer however has not returned the agreement and has not tried to contact the office since we sent her the agreement. Our offer of $419.32 is still available to Mrs. L. and we will issue a credit to her charge card once we have received our agreement.
