I own a BMW 740iL which had 103K miles when the warranty was purchased from CarChex in Feb 2011, the car isn't driven much because I use public transportation to work, mostly driven on Weekends.
Service engine light came on about a 6 weeks ago, immediately took car to shop for diagnosis. Mechanic had a lot of work to perform so I told mechanic that since I take public transportation to work, just let me know when you get to
it.
After a week, said that the diagnosis is a Vanos Bank Fault and there are special tools are required to perform this maintenance and they had to be ordered. As soon the tools arrive, he'll put in a claim to start the work.
After about three weeks, the tools arrived and he called Alpha Warranty Services for the claim. He was told that the claim was denied because the repair was not covered. He present a part number(11361438694)for some of the numerous items involved with and the rep told him that the part wasn't on an itemized part list thats used to determine eligibility for repair. In short, if the part didn't say "Vanos Bank", then its denied.
I called the rep to ask what list was used to make that determination? She said that each automobile has master list that is used for parts. She didn't check to see if it was under a different name or type. So I asked her if you have an "itemized list of parts thats covered for the automobile, then it should be on there. The contract states that parts related to the engine are covered, which what the vanos bank is. She said that the adjuster said its not covered which I believe that they don't know what the repair or part is. She also stated that they have mechanics who can verify the repair and again she said its not covered.

The customer did purchase an Extended Coverage plan. The Extended plan is a great plan that provides very extensive coverage. The Extended Coverage plan offers stated component coverage. Meaning, if the plan specifically states that a component is covered and falls within the terms and conditions of coverage, then it is covered. If the component is not listed for coverage unfortunately it is not covered.
It appears that the confusion lies in what type of coverage the customer had selected. The plan covers many major systems of the vehicle including the engine, transmission, drive axle, air conditioning, electrical, fuel system, steering, etc.
Unfortunately, in this case, the claim was submitted for a component that is simply not listed for coverage. Our programs are refundable and each protection plan contains information regarding our cancellation process. In fact, we even provide a full refund within 30 days.
