This assisted living facility is ripping off seniors. The building is licensed as a boarding home, however they are operating as a semi nursing home.

The prices for the 'apartments' are userous. The per month amounts range from $1800. for a 'companion suite' all the way up to $7000. a month for a 1 bedroom with 'medical' services.

The population can be as high as 138 residents, with a kitchen budget of $2600.per/mo. for 3 meals a day for all residents.

The 'in house' managers are only concerned with keeping their cushy jobs, not the welfare of the residents. I suggest that you not place family, loved ones in this facility.

This facility was recently bought by Brookdale Senior Living.

Not sure about that...

My in-laws were and several friends are at the Alterra assisted living facility here in Richland. Yes, it is expensive but the service they provide is outstanding in my experience. When my in-laws moved in, we were allowed to paint, wallpaper and even put up wainscoting up to make it more like home for them. And the suite was very spacious. The prices compared favorably to other facilities we know in the area. Full end-of-life care as offered at this place is expensive, particularly if you are intent on providing a well-rounded life-style and competent staff.

When my in-laws were there, they had a two-bedroom suite with medical services and their costs were 2,000-3,000 less than claimed in his write-up.

I'm not sure what he means by "boarding home" or "semi-nursing home" but Alterra is a licensed assisted living facility with approved capability to care for just about anything up until the death of the resident. Full-care nursing staff and all the services we could have wanted: activities, trips, special events with churches, orchestras, and the like coming in to entertain the residents. I've seen the food, the quality and quantity. I've eaten there on a number of occasions. The suggestion that the kitchen budget is only $2,600 a month is silly.

In a couple of cases, they even made room for relatives to stay when visiting. A few rooms were available when a resident was in particular need of close supervision for a period of time for some reason...near the nurses' station. And quick assistance was available at the pull of a chain (found in a few locations in each suite). We were always welcome to dine with our parents or even friends.

I've known the other facilities in the area fairly intimately and I would be more than willing to stack Alterra against any facility for quality and service.

Nursing home? Yes. Assisted living? Yes. Cheap? No. Worth it? Yes. Dedicated staff. You bet.

Just another opinion from somebody who has had years of experience with that facility and doesn't get a penny from them for giving a different view.
