I had been a faithful Amazon.com customer for many years and had purchased quite a few books, electronic goods and CDs from them. I went to the web site once again to purchase a particular book and the web page said something like "Order only $X.XX more for free super saver shipping" -- "super saver" requires a $49 purchase for which they will alledgedly save you a few buck by shipping the order at a special slow rate.
Well, ok, I though, it's not exactly urgent, so I went back and picked out enough to make super saver.
When I went to the check out, there was an option for the super saver but I was not allowed to check it: that is, every time I tried to, the check mark would not stay. I placed the order anyway (my mistake) and though contacting customer support would do the trick.
After repeated explanations and return messages from "customer service" in which it became clear that they didn't read the messages I sent, the outcome was that they would not refund shipping and would not cancel the order. The pigs were just too greedy, I guess.
I cancelled my account and will never shop at a store, brick 'n mortar or internet, which doesn't give you what was promised and advertised and which had me buying more that I originally wanted to. Barnes and Noble (bn.com) looks like they just won a new customer!

Just wanted to say the exact same thing happened to me on Amazon, except when the box did not stay checked I clicked on a thing that said "having problems?" or something like that. A few of the items I had selected for purchase were not eligible for super saver shipping, and their price was not counted in the tally for the $49 needed. The items in question were clearly marked in their descriptions as "ineligible for super saver shipping". although I wouldn't have noticed this had I not been looking for it.
