I have had several AOL accounts over the years. I've had to turn them off for a variety of reasons (moving, etc.) I have noticed that its getting harder and harder to cancel.

Most recently, I closed an account in December of 2005. It took 10 days, at over 2 hours per day talking to reps to get it closed. The reps I spoke to would not let me close the account.

Even at the end of a conversation, after I had gone through hell to get them to just close the account, I would check the next day to verify, only to discover that the rep did not close the account at all - they just pretended the conversation never happened (for my own good, they said - nothing is more important that having AOL, even if you can't log on, for whatever reason).

I suppose I could have simply temporarily suspended the account, but with cust svc like that, I don't want to do business with them any more.

Beyond that, to this day (March 2006) they are STILL BILLING ME for this closed account. 22 every single month (sometimes twice a month). I can not get them to stop. I've even tried to close my bank account, but the account reopens with a negative balance when they force a charge through!

I'm at the point where I've considered turning the account back on, so that I can 'get caught' doing something naughty - maybe then they'll turn the d@mn thing off!

#4 Consumer Suggestion

Log in and change your account to Free

AUTHOR: Juliet - (U.S.A.)

I've had AOL for 8 years, and when they began offering reduced price accounts, and free ones, I did switch to the $9.99 one, but not free, because I do like AOL, and feel it IS worth paying $10 a month for. That particular account is for broadband/DSL accounts, not dial-up.

Anyway, I did need to switch to a Free Account, after a while, and I have had no problem whatsoever doing so. You WOULD have to be able to log in to your account (not sure if the writer can???), but if so, then you go to My Account, and Billing Plans, etc., and select a Free Account.

Truly, I didn't have a single problem after doing so. I was billed for the month that I was in, yes, but since then, no problems at all.

Good luck.
