I recently purchased two round-trip tickets for my family from Los Angeles to Atlanta. Unfortunately, because of extenuating circumstances and a family emergency those tickets have become effectively unusable and my family will not be able to enjoy this trip. I then emailed AA Customer Relations and Reservations departments multiple times about my predicament, to which I was told "we have put an authorization into your tickets to waive the applicable change fees. Please note that the validity period of the tickets remains the same and any fare differences will still apply." This offer does not solve my problem because 1. I have no idea when my family will have another opening to visit 2. Fare differences might make any new dates more expensive 3. I do not have the luxury to have money tied up til my family can figure out a new date. After emailing and calling American Airlines several times, I was told "there is nothing we can do."

Typing the same message does nothing.

I ordered the tickets and had to contact AA several times just to get my confirmation number and itenerary....shady. I attempted to cancel 24 hrs after receiving my confirmation which is perfectly acceptable. If you don't want AA on Ripoff Report then send customers their information when you take money out of their account so that your guidelines are not null.

AAs got a measely $500 from me that I can now not use but I'll now be with Delta after using AAs for years. You're welcome.

Standard Response..

AUTHOR: Robert - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, May 10, 2016

And there we have it..Standard Response 105C.  The "I can't deny anything that was said, so I am going to come up with something totally different and try to see if people realize that my claim has more holes in it than swiss cheese".

Yep, you see there wasn't one piece of your original story, not even a small crumb that this had anything to do with them not honoring their 24-Hour refund policy.  So nice try but for anyone who believes this, I have a nice bridge for sale in San Francisco.

I don't even think you realize that this now kills any other "argument" you had that you didn't know their policy.  After all you now claim you knew enough about the 24-hour refund policy.  So it is extreamly likely you know about their standard cancellation policy..including all of the fees and time limits.

By the way here are some additional facts on their refund policy.  First it only applies if you purchase your tickets from AA or one of it's codeshare airlines. Next, it only applies if the flight is more than 7 days away.  And lastly and most importantly it is 24-Hours from the time you make the booking...NOT when you receive any sort of email.

But then again, there is another perfect opportuntity for a "less than honest" individual to take advantage of something.  After all if it is as you claim 24 hours after they send it to you.  What would keep anyone from claiming they never got the confirmation code, even though they had.  Just imagine, you purchase a ticket and a month later you all of the sudden want a change.  Where because they never "sent" you a confirmation number you get to cancel because it hasn't been 24 hours since they sent it..because you never "got" it.

I can't wait to see what claim you try and make next.  Oh and if your next claim is that I work for AA..don't bother.  I do not now or have I ever worked for this or any airline.  But I do fly reguarly and know how air fares work.

You Make Assumptions

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, May 10, 2016

It should be noted that the day I paid, the day the payments were taken out of my account, and the day I had to harass AA for my confirmation # were not all on the same day. You have 24 hours after receiving confirmation # for a refund and they did not honor that because they forgot to even send it.

Please don't make assumptions, jacka**.

That is not how it works....

Unfortunatly you do not seem to understand how airline tickets work.

You see you purchased "Discounted" restricted fare tickets, as such one of the restrictions is no refunds and you are subject to change/cancellation fees.  Yes, this is in the terms of the ticket you agreed to(regardless of if you read it or not).

Now, I will let you know you got very lucky in them waiving the change fees.  That is a rarity so for you to write a "RipOff" report after that fact because you want MORE...makes it look like you are just one greedy entitled PITA.

As you are apparently asking in addition to them waiving the fees is that they allow you to select any flight at any time for all eternity and pay only what you paid for these tickets.  Perhaps in your fantasy world that would happen but not in reality, and not with any airline.  As I can see it now...You purchased tickets for some weekday in the middle of January when no one else is traveling and you got a bargin basement price.  Then surprise..surprise the ONLY time that all of your family can make this trip is if you leave on the day before Thanksgiving that just happens to be the busiest travel day of the year as well as the most expensive.   As I said..nice try.

Also, your claim that you don't want your money "tied up" is a false argument.  No one forced you to purchase the tickets and your money wasn't any more tied up than it is now.  If your "extenuating circumstances" have to do with you not being able to afford the tickets any longer, unfortunatly that is not AA's problem.

As to how to avoid this situation in the future.

1. You can purchase the "Full Fare" Unrestricted tickets, these tickets allow you to get a full refund in case you can't travel for any reason.  Of course these Unrestricted tickets will be 2-3 times higher than the price you paid.

2. Purchase insurance for your trip.  Then if the reason you can't go is covered under the insurance the insurance will refund your money.  Of course this also adds a bit of a cost and not every situation is covered...but it is an option.

Oh and again these policies are not just AA but just about every airline out there.  The one exception is with Southwest they do not have Change Fees to begin with but all other policies you have a problem with apply with them as well.
