I purchased two tickets for a round-trip from OKC to Norfolk on July 10. The person using the second ticket cannot now go, but AA says that for me to get a refund, the person listed on the second ticket must be dead. They will not let me use the ticket on a later date either. They offer no opportunity for me to get any value for the $425 I have already paid them. Ordinary people go to jail for less dishonesty and fair practice than this.

Passenger CAN use ticket-not the purchaser

AUTHOR: Valerie - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 29, 2008

The PASSENGER may use that ticket for up to one year from the date of purchase. The airline does NOT care who purchased the ticket, the name cannot be transferred in 99.9% of the cases.

They will charge a $100 penalty plus any fare difference.

I agree with Karl....you are spot on about how the airlines USED to be. Flying USED to be fun, no more.

Mr.Clean Lives in Another World

AUTHOR: Karl - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, July 28, 2008

Mr.Clean lives back in the pre-deregulation days when airline customer service was just fine. Airlines actually cared whether or not you flew on them. There were meals, coach lounges, all tickets were refundable, and fares were published in the timetables. After deregulation the airlines felt that cheap fares were all that was important and customer service went steadily downhill. Now the major airlines have huge fuel and labor costs and have instituted as many extra fees as possible -fees for baggage checking, telephone reservations, seat assignments, even a drink of water. I expect to see the end of Frequent Flyer points very soon.

Bottom line is that there is no customer service and there won't be any improvement. "Doing the right thing" won't happen and everyone needs to read the rules before buying a ticket. If you buy a non-refundable ticket then it will be non-refundable. If the rule says that you can't get a refund or use later a ticket you bought for someone else then guess what - you can't use it later or get a refund. There is hope for those of you who wanrt to pretend it is 1978. Buy a First Class fully refundable ticket or charter a private jet. If you can't afford that then fly Southwest -the last airline in the country that provides real customer service.

So Negative

AUTHOR: Mrclean61 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 22, 2008

I see so many people see these postings as a place to show just how intelligent they are. Here's a person that has an issue with American Airlines and so many want to tell them just how wrong they are for having an opinion. Maybe there is a policy that American uses to keep from having to refund money to individuals such as the poster of this article, but that doesn't make it right.

I can see how American has the right to refuse a refubd, but why not allow this individual to at least get some benefit for their money. Why can't American allow them to use this ticket at a later date, on a stand by basis or something of this nature? That's the problem with a lot of companies now a days, they've lost track of what true customer service means. This person is going to be much less likely to ever use American again for travel purposes. Don't tell me what policy says! Do the right thing!

Simply Wrong

AUTHOR: Truth Teller - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 12, 2008

When you purchase the cheaper tickets (which your ticket was per information you provided) you take the chance that if the ticket is not used you will be out the money. This is not the fault of American Airlines but it is a chance you took and lost.

Next time buy a fully refundable ticket if you are not certain the ticket which you purchased will be used.

Penalty Charge

AUTHOR: Karl - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 18, 2008

American used to allow a year to use the unused ticket with a $100 cancellation charge. If you paid $475 and you decided to take a trip to someplace that cost $375 you would pay nothing. If you went to a destination that cost $500 you would pay $575. In any event the VALUE of the ticket could be used for travel within a year FROM THE TIME YOU BOUGHT THE TICKET -NOT FROM JULY 10! This may have changed. If it has I'd like to hear from somebody who works for AA. Southwest credits the full price of the ticket with no cancellation charge. You have a year to use it and it is just like a voucher. This is why I always travel Southwest.

Non-Refundable Ticket

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 04, 2008

You purchased a discounted Non-Refundable ticket. The terms of the ticket are disclosed to you when you purchased it. This is a very standard policy at not only American Airlines but ANY airline, so no RipOff you just did not bother to read the terms of the ticket.

The reason that they are discounted is because they don't have to build in the cost of loosing the ability to sell that seat if you need to cancel. If you wanted the ability to refund the ticket you would have needed to purchase a Full fare ticket, although the full fare ticket would have cost you around $1200 or more.
