American Express is only interested in stealing your money. I have been a very good customer for many years. Suddenly, without reason, they have reduced my credit limit every time I make a big payment to pay down my balance. I admit, it was a high balance several years ago, but I had just bought a house. I have one of the revolving balance accounts.

I have been steadily paying it down, and everytime I make a big payment, they drop my credit. To make it worse, the letter they send with the explaination lies about the reasons why. They say my credit report says things about me that it doesn't. I have pulled it up every time I get one of those letters, and the reasons they say don't exist. I have faxed them repeated copies of my credit report to tell them they are incorrect, and they don't even look at them. They just mail me back and say they "cannot" change their minds. They really should say they "will not."

As soon as I can pay this off, I'm going to close it for good. No one should ever get a credit card from American Express. They just want to rip you off.

American Express did the same to me...It is an intentional scam they pull!

Virginia,

Thomas hit the nail on the head. AMEX does this intentionally, especially if you have more than 1 card with them. By lowering your available credit, they are really just keeping you close to your balance which kills your credit score and also keeps you from getting cards elsewhere.

This is intentional. It is a scam. Then when your credit score drops because of it, they can hike your interest rate.

AMEX is too arrogant to explain the reasons for what they do, or to admit they made a mistake. There are hundreds of complaints of this nature on the internet in general, and on a site dedicated only to AMEX which is amexsux.com. AMEX is a terrible company who cannot be trusted. I had 3 accounts with them and was a customer in good standing for 12 years. They closed my accounts for no apparent reason, as I was never delinquent, and had a 735 credit score.

Run fast if AMEX sends you a card invitation.

AMEX truly does suck.

You did not explicity 'say' (though I infer it) that

American Express lowers your credit limit so that your (new) balance is (still) a 'high percentage of' your (new) credit limit? And that then AMEX can charge you a higher interest rate 'because' your (new) balance is (still) a high percentage of your (new) credit limit? If I am guessing right, I think this practice would also hit your FICO score. In which case, loose that account.

Hey, I had an AMEX green card in the 1960's but it went away in the 1970's. It lost its intrinsic and extrinsic advantages w/r/t its cost.
