I have been a customer of American express for about 6 years. I never had any problems untill I got a little behind recently on my monthly payments.. Most companies understand and have been very good to work with me, NOT American Express, they have a collection agency out of Florida that is absolutly horrible to deal with.
I have gone out of my way to work with them and pay my debt, They want full payment of 12 grand ASAP, they have threatened me with lawsuits, leins on my house,, they will not give me a break on the payments or interest. All I get is Nasty phone calls, threats and everything else.. I want to pay my debt but because of their business practices, they are making it impossiblem

They told me if I paid 1/2 the total balance ( $6,000.00) they would let me use it again,

I seriously doubt this....Once you default on an Amex card or discharge it through BK...Amex has a reputation of not re-issuing cards to you ever again.
You might want to confirm whether or not Amex has charge-off off this account and sold it to a 3rd-party collection agency...It sounds like they might have done this already.

Amex, and most other creditors, WILL demand payment for 120 days past due account!
AUTHOR: Carl - (U.S.A.)

Hi, I read your "situation" with interest. Please don't misunderstand, I'm not passing judgement here, and I know times can get tough, but there are some items that ARE clear here:
__Your card is now (or at one time was) over 120 days past due.
__AMEX (and anyone else) will either suspend or cancel and account that is beyond 60 to 90 days past due.
__Your card agreement (as with most credit cards) probably does state that the balance is due in full once the account is consider "not in good standing".
__You broke your payback agreement on an unsecured loan (credit card) of $12,000. As a result, you are now a credit risk to AMEX>
I understand that your situation suks*....but the reality of the situation is, your creditor WILL demand payment in full (AMEX, Mortgage, Car Note, etc...) once you go into default. It's just the way it is. You broke your cardmember agreement with them...they want you to pay up.
My point is, I don't think you should really be surprised or angry here. I DO hope you are able to catch up as soon as possible and that your situation turns around....I've been there! Good luck.

Suspended credit card

Right now my credit card is suspended. They told me if I paid 1/2 the total balance ( $6,000.00) they would let me use it again, but they keep threatening me to to sue me personnaly if I dont pay up. They have forced me to try and remortgage my house, max out my other creidt cards to pay them. They are really nasty to deal with, add in 29.9 % interest, and it's been impossible.
I am truely trying, I have applied to 5 places to re-mortage my house, because my creidt score is 525, these mortgage companys are offering me 10% mortgages while my current mortgage is less then 6%.
I have never been treated as bad as American Express has treated me. I've been telling everyone not to get behind. I am all caught up as far as outstanding payments but they are still harrassing me for at least the 6 grand, if not the total 12 grand.

What occurs if American Express CANCELLED the card as opposed to SUSPENDING it? If the card company actually cancels the card, where does that leave the consumer?

Some question
AUTHOR: Don - (U.S.A.)

Can I ask a questions here. Is the card still active (can you still use it?)? The company that I collect for restricts the card once the account has gone 3 months past due. IT also means that while we are jus trying to save the charge off, are top goal is a balance in full payment. If it is still active, then I reccommend paying what is needed to keep it that way.

You are confused

Your response was 12 grand behind,, that is wrong.
My total balance is 12 grand,, I was only $1200.00 behind in my paymentss ( $300 a month for 4 months). The collection agencey told me American Express wanted the whole 12 grand payed off ASAP.. They told me even if I came up with 6 grand, which is 1/2 the total balance they would leave me alone.
To show good faith, I took out 2 grand on another charge card to pay them down, but that was not enough, they are still harrassing me for the total balance. The 2 grand I sent to them more than covered my back payments, but they are still not happy.

"A Little Behind" ?

"12 grand" sounds like more then a little behind. They're probably looking at how many other accounts you're "a little behind" on also. Besides the amoumt, how mamy payments have you missed? Did you have a regular card, where you had to pay the balance off each month or was it a revolving account? I hate ae and their business practices. You might consult an attorney for your options.
