Received an offer by email from Ancestry.com offering a six-month subscription for $49.00.  Contacted them on 24 March 2013 and placed a subscription, order no. 105892134 charged to my credit card.  Attempted to use the subscription but no avail.  Called the customer service phone number was told the charge would be $77.00.  Terrible phone connection, sounded like someone shouting down a tunnel.  Customer service repeatedly asked for my name, email, address and order number and wanted to know if I were John (Surname).  Finally gathered, they wanted a payment of 6 time $13.  Insisted they cancel the order.  Same date received an email with the cancellation confirmation 8142342.  Sadly, they now have a credit card information.

Agree with Nicole

Nicole is right.  I was alsolutely stupid to get suckered in for a six month membership for $49.  It did offer a week or two free trial before the charge but the free trial did not work until I agreed to the $77 charge.

Who does that?

I have been an off-and-on subscriber of ancestry.com since 2007, cancelling when I hit a roadblock in the research or not having the time to use the site...and then renewing later on. With zero problems. The site offers a free-trial to see if you even like the service first so why shoot right for -buying- a 6 month subscription anyways? I recently resubscribed to address some things to someone that had contacted me on there, and then cancelled before the free trial was up. No issues.

I don't see any elaboration on the actual issue with the subscription here though. Could you just not log in right away or was the subscription to the site not what you thought it would be? I think you should have just trialed this first before having bought anything.

I've never even been subscribed to the site for a complete 6-month stint and I've done a few different trees. Subscribing to the service does not mean that a worker at ancestry.com does the research for you. Some trees have been easy enough to do, and others have been a crapshoot trying to get started. Do I fault the company? Nope.
