Show customers why they should trust your business over your competitors...

I just checked my credit card statement.  On 2/13/12 there is a charge for $155.40.  I have not purchased anything from and don't know how they gained access to my credit card.  I am upset and will contact them until they reverse this ridiculous charge.

ripoff on

AUTHOR: xxsamuroxx - ()

I signed up for and used my creidt card for a 14 day free trial. These are the reasons why this site is a ripoff:

1) It charges your credit card a rediculous amount of money automatically without informing you or asking you. They just want your money.

2) You have to pay for other things on the site such as birth cirtificats and other governmental documents.

3) There's no way to cancel your order. There isn't the option to.

4) Agreeing it in the terms and conditions, the conditions no one reads, it is true that is a rip off. If someone were to actually understand that the site will charge your credit card tons of money, they probably won't sign up.

5) I found nothing on my dad's side, and he's still living. How do you even know that the person you found is the person you're related to? I don't trust this site with credit card information and i certainly don't think it's worth it. THey don't respect that they are taking almost $156 dollars from people's lives.

6) They use propaganda in their commercials to get you to come to this siteand they pay actors to portray a customer.

What most likely happened was...

AUTHOR: Laura - (United States of America)

I work for and I can tell you $155.40 is the cost for an annual US membership.  When you sign up for the 14 day trial you are at THAT time ultimately choosing the member that YOU are AGREEING to be billing to your card if you DO NOT cancel within the 14 days. You are also agreeing for that membership to renew for the duration of time you picked, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual until you cancel.  So, if you signed up 'years ago' it's possible that you had your 14 day trial, was charged $155.40 on that 14th day and now a YEAR later, getting billed another $155.40. Chill.

Rebuttal to A Response Regarding Ancestry.Com

AUTHOR: Isis5467 - (United States of America)

I did not resign up for anything.  Years ago I signed up for a subscription and termed it.  All of a sudden I'm being charged for something I did not renew that I refuse to pay.  I have no problem paying for what I order but don't bill me for something I didn't order and tell me I ordered it.  I'm not stupid.

Watch your Credit Cards

I've happily been with for a couple of years now.  They are easily available via their 800 number, perhaps you can sort your charges out there.

THEY NEED TO KNOW just in case some scam really is being cooked up by an employee!  It happens!

Contact your credit card company and tell them this is either is an error or somebody is hijacking your iaccount nfo.  They will assist you.  Good Luck!

I did not sign up for a 14 day anything.  Years ago I signed up.  That's what was used to establish something new.  I'm not paying for something I didn't order.

#6 Consumer Suggestion

When you signed up for your free 14 day trail....

You failed to cancel in a timely manner.

The info on the order page tells you what you will be billed if you don't cancel when you should.

The "Terms of use" link at the bottom of the order page further explains it.  YOU DID agree to the additional billing by your lack of action.
They just didn't pick your credit card information out of the air.
Here's a part of the Terms of Use page:

All subscriptions are automatically renewing with the exception of gift subscriptions and pay-per view. This means that once you become a subscribing member, your subscription will be automatically renewed and your billing choice will be charged based on the subscription program (semiannually, quarterly, monthly, etc.) you have chosen unless you opt out or cancel by following the instructions in this Agreement. Except in the case of monthly subscriptions, you will be notified via e-mail before your subscription ends and asked to correct any information which has changed and whether you wish to "opt out" of your renewal. The renewal of the subscription takes place subject to the terms in force on the date of renewal.

When other offers, promotions or free trials are made available, the specific terms and conditions that apply to each will stated at the time of purchase; please ensure you have noted any relevant rules, cancellation dates or price changes when a promotion or free trial ends.

Opting Out of Renewal. You may opt out of renewing your subscription by calling Ancestry at 1-800-262-3787 or by logging into your MyAccount page on the Website at least two days before the renewal date. If you do not let us know that you want to terminate your subscription at least two days prior to the end of the current subscription period the payment for the renewal period of the subscription will be made.

Cancellations. An initial subscription comes with the option to cancel during the first seven days and receive a full refund, unless the subscription began with a free trial period. The seven day period begins on the day you register as a subscriber, which is also the day you are given access to the subscription area of the Website. If you subscribe to the Website following a free or other trial period, that trial period takes the place of the seven day cancellation period, and once the paid subscription begins, no refund will be provided (please note that for gift subscriptions, the seven days begins on the date of purchase no matter what date the subscription was activated). Cancellations may be made by calling Ancestry at 1-800-262-3787 or by logging into your MyAccount page on the Website and providing the same information that you provided when you subscribed. Your cancellation must be received by end of business (5:00 p.m. Mountain Time) on the seventh subscription day. All refunds will be given to the original credit card on which the purchase was made. Please allow a reasonable time for the refund to reach you or be charged back to your account. All other subscriptions may be canceled by you at any time but no refund will be made for unused subscription periods.
I've used this company's service extensively over several years and found them to honest and have pretty accurate information.

If you haven't cancelled yet, watch your subscription expiration date and be sure to cancel before it renews.  If you just cancel now, you likely won't recieve a refund and you won't be able to use the service you paid for.  It IS a good site.   NO, I DON'T work for them.
