I subscribed to Ancestry.com about 45 days ago. I entered my credit card information and specifically did not check the box on their page for them to automatically bill the same credit card for the next payment. I did not check this box because I did not want future payments to come from this credit card.

However, they still billed my credit card without my authorizaton. I called the company immediately when I found out what had happened and was told by the person I spoke with that they weren't aware of this option, and also that she had cancelled my subscription and it would run out Feb 4, 2004.

I told her that I wanted it to end NOW and asked to speak to a supervisor immediately. After speaking with a supervisor and pointing it out to him that they had made an unauthorized credit card transaction, he agreed to cancel my subscription however he would not give me a refund.

After this I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and upon researching the company before I filed the complaint. They have a Derrogatory Rating due to billing and subscripton complaints. SO BUYER BEWARE!
You can double check this for yourself, go to ancestry.com and go through the steps of getting a subscription, when you get to the payment information it is clearly stated there, ALso, look at their record with the Better Business Bureau

BBB and misleading statement

AUTHOR: James B. - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, June 24, 2004

Unfortunately the box you are talking about is probably "check this box to use this card for renewals" or very similar words and has nothing to do with auto-renewals. The autorenewal policies are in the "terms and Conditions". It is very misleading to say the least.
The BBB unfortunately has a "satisfactory rating" for MFI at the present time. I have never seem anything worse than an "under review" from the BBB for MFI as a result of "customer experience". There ratins for an online company are worthless in my opinion. Here is the link:

Ancestry.com charged me for unauthorized product

AUTHOR: Yvonne - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, June 24, 2004

I was notified by email that Ancestry.com had charged my credit card for a Family Tree product which I did not reqeus, authorize or even want. They admit it was an error on their part but are unwilling to return my money until 30 days after they are in receipt of the original product. I am told that it shipped out to me 1 day ago and I must refuse it with my post office and once it is back in their shipping department, they will refund my credit card within 30 days.

I requested that they recall the item but no go. Forget the 14 day trial offer, you cannot get through to them to cancel. They disconnect you or tell you their computers are down and you will need to call back. I have never seen a company work in such an underhanded manner and would encourage anyone thinking of using Ancestry.com to try Familysearch.org.

Much better information and WOW! it's free. Save yourself some money and big headaches and avoid Ancestry.com like the plague.
