63 cats taken from Marion County home
Last Updated: Thursday, September 02, 2010 3:36 PM
MARION COUNTY -- Sixty-three cats and other animals have been removed from a Marion County home. Marion County Animal Services say they removed the cats, along with an Amazon bird and a Golden Retriever dog that were living in poor conditions from a home on Thoroughbred Acres, Thursday. The owner, 54-year-old Merry Wichman, bred and sold cats on the website, Angel Babies Maine Coon Cat. Animal services say many of the animals were housed in 5-by-4 foot chain link cages with nine to 17 cats inside each one. Marion County Fire Rescues HazMat team tested the air quality inside the home and determined it unsafe to enter without a respirator. The Marion County Sheriffs Office removed Wichman from her property via the Baker Act and into protective custody for a mental evaluation. According to Dr. David Jebens, DVM, Animal Services staff veterinarian, the cats conditions range from emaciated to fair/good. Many of the cats have respiratory issues, most likely from living in filthy conditions with poor air quality. Some of the cats are extremely thin and most have matted fur, flea infestation, skin problems and extremely foul odor due to living in their own waste. The animals are now housed at the Marion County Animal Center, where staff is providing medical and nutritional care. Animal Services staff plans to file a petition for custody within 10 days as well as seek cruelty charges against the animal owner through the State Attorneys Office.

Many cats, other animals taken from home

Marion County Animal Services staff worked into early Thursday morning to take custody of 63 Maine Coon type cats, an Amazon bird and a Golden Retriever dog that were living in poor conditions on a property in Thoroughbred Acres (7850 SW 10th St.). The owner, Merry Wichman, 54, bred and sold the cats via www.mainecooncat.com and housed them inside her home, in a patio room and outside in the yard. Several 5-by-4 foot chain link cages housed nine to 17 cats each. Feces, dirt and dust covered the home and patio.

The Humane Society Naples is now in possession of 15 pure-breed Maine Coon cats. The 15 are from an original group of 63, confiscated in September from an Ocala breeder by Marion County Animal Services.

Marion County Animal Services kept 19 of the cats for adoption and contacted Lee County resident Charlene Campbell, Region 7 Coordinator for Cat Fanicers Association Breeders Assist and Breed Rescue, for assistance in placing the remaining cats. She sent out an appeal to area pet rescues and arranged transfer of the remaining cats to Animal Refuge Center and Gulf Coast Humane Society in Lee County and The Humane Society Naples and Volunteer Services for Animals in Collier County .

The cats are all adults, have been sterilized, microchipped, are current on their vaccines and are ready for immediate adoption. Because they are pure breeds, their adoption fee is $250 each, and that includes 30 days of free pet health insurance.

Incorporated in 1960, The Humane Society Naples is a private local non-profit, no-kill animal shelter. Located at 370 Airport-Pulling Road North in Naples, The Humane Society's Adoption Center hours are Tuesday and Thursday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For adoption information, call 643-1555 or log onto HSNaples.org
