Posted: 19-01-2010 20:11:25 Sunday evening police notified me a large and rather famous Bengal breeder neglected by up to 130 cats. Monday noon I met with police and a good cat friend out at the address where the cats were. It was an indescribable shocking sight that met us. Large and small groups of cats trapped in old staldrum without anything else to lie in nothing more than a few cardboard boxes. The floor overstet with s**t and empty cans. No form of heat, no blankets - nothing.

The farmhouse was stopped with cats and here there were also literally s**t everywhere. Outside the race also cats around - how many I do not know, for most hid. Our best estimate is that, overall, are 80 to 100 cats. My best guess is that Denmark has never experienced a case of cats in this magnitude.

I know that this will shake you, and you all will sit and hunger for more information. But you will not probably be confident that there is a grip on proceedings and that the authorities do everything they can. So please do not pester veterinarian, police or others. The case has run 100% by the book and it is a really good police officer who runs the case.

I'll update this thread as it can be done. I spent all my time Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of this case. Spoken with police, journalists (it's not me who has contacted them), breeders, cat-protection, the owner of the property the cats are on Others I would also urge you not to start a lynching atmosphere against her. It is hideous, horrible, repulsive and a lot else, it has occurred.

But things have clearly slipped her completely out of hand and we will not help the cats in any way by the cat world throws himself over her. Believe me - there are others who probably should make sure that she will be held accountable for his deeds. I would like to put names to say that she is mentally ill and seriously need help. But she has no self-knowledge of it. She acknowledges pt. nothing, and my greatest sadness is that she probably did not ask for help for the cats. And without help she comes NEVER to get a grip on proceedings. Cat Protection is ready to help, but they can not - and should not - do something before she even addressed. Pt I try and others to mobilize any kind of help for her (the cats!) By people whom she might talk to.

Bengal cats rescued - facts pt.1

OK - I'm back with some more facts about this tragic case. I want to say that I do not know the breeder or any of the other persons involved. I can only describe the case as I've heard it from the press and other public sources. First a translation of the article from the website of Danish newspaper 'Midtjyllands Avis', which I mentioned earlier. It goes ----- 100 cats living in their own feces.

Neglect Having received a report about animal cruelty, the police from Silkeborg and a veterinary officer turned out on Tuesday morning to a small farm on Hgholmsvej near Voel. Here they found nearly 100 cats left to themselves. All cats were of the 'Bengal' breed and were locked up in a cowhouse and in the uninhabited farmhouse, where they walked around in their own feces with no access to fresh air. - The owner of the cats is likely to be fined for violating the law on animal cruelty. The veterinarian found that the animals were well fed with access to food and water. The transgression is their lack of opportunity to keep themselves clean and to move around, says Deputy Police Commissioner Jrgen Jensen from Silkeborg Police.

The cats are to be moved The owner of the cats does not live on the farm, but she was there when police and veterinarian paid a visit to check. Jrgen Jensen will not state what warnings or injunctions the owner has received from the police. - There is an ongoing police investigation about the case and we await a final report from the veterinary authorities, says Jrgen Jensen. For many years the cat owner has been breeding Bengal cats. However, when speaking to mja.dk she denies being a cat breeder anymore. She will not disclose how many cats are on the premises. - But all cats will be moved somewhere else, says the cat owner, who does not want to make any further comments.

It features intervies with Bente Eriksen, who is heading the local branch of Dyrenes Beskyttelse, the main animal welfare organization in Denmark. Also owner of the house Anne Lis Toft, who let the house to the breeder back in April 2008. It was in good condition back then, now it's ruined. Finally we see Morten Rostock, assessor of the mortgage loan company. He has never smelled anything like this before and has to go outside "for some fresh air"... -----

The police report was filed by another breeder, Louise D., who sensed something had gone terribly wrong. On cat site (((link redacted))) she tells about what the house looked like, when she arrived there with the police. Very graphic, but if you saw the video clip, you'll know. She closes her message by saying, "I urge you not to start a lynching campain against her. What has happened is hideous, terrible, repulsive and a lot more. But things have clearly slipped out of her hands completely and having the cat world throwing itself on her will not help the cats in any way. Believe me - others will make sure she is held responsible for what she has done. I'll lend my name to saying she is mentally disordered and seriously needs help. But she herself does not realize."

----- The animal welfare organization Dyrenes Beskyttelse seized 100 cats in all and placed them at their shelter in Brande. All of them had diarrhea and other disease like inflammation of the eyes, respiratory illnesses etc. It was suspected some had had their lungs damaged from inhaling ammonia. Sadly most of them did not recover - many because their intestines were so damaged they could not gain weight. After a couple of months only 17 cats had survived and put up for adoption. Having been in the news they of course all found new good homes right away. One cat was returned to the owner as part of an agreement. This means that 82 Bengal cats could not survive and had to be put down. I'll write the number again, so you can think about it for a moment - 82 (Source Dyrenes Beskyttelse magazine, June 2010 issue).

To me this is a typical story of how bad things can go, when a person responsible for living creatures looses control of his or her life. We've seen it with animal hoarders, we've seen it with farmers, with horse breeders and - with cat breeders. It can happen anywhere and the only thing we can do is to keep our eyes open. Once things gets as far as in this case, the chance of the animals surviving is real low.

Many cats purchased from cats bred by Voel have lots of disease problems, if they were not killed by their new owners Voel / COPENHAGEN: Inbreeding, intestinal problems, ear mites resistant, recurrent eye inflammation, cats rhinitis and much more. Common to us is also that all the cats are sick, if we do not even have had to have them killed, "says Jean Larsen from Copenhagen. She bought himself three cats cats breeder back in October 2008. - I'm probably one of the few who actually removed my cats on the property at Voel. Even then there were lots of cats. They sat almost shoulder to shoulder in the windows. But I was not allowed to enter, "says Jean Larsen regretted the purchase, she has since regretted his purchase bitterly. For one of the three cats were so sick that she eventually had to get it killed. The subsequent autopsy revealed, among other things, that the cat was missing some of its organs. The two surviving cats have since beaten with various diseases and pests as it is almost impossible to get tackled. One, a male, on a scale so Jean Larsen has been banned from taking it for exhibitions. It also saw an abnormality in the form of two fused tail. - We now gather a small group of cat owners with miscellaneous papers and vet bills, so we can get an overview. Our hope is that we can do something to stop cat breeder, thus ensuring that she can not continue to sell his cat, says Mr Larsen.
