I was solicited over the phone for a magazine subscription. I agreed. The caller made false pretensions that his company was a trusted partner with American Express, so I naively assumed the subscriptions and business practices were safe in nature, and that I was receiving magazines at a discounted rate.

Later, I called to cancel this subscription only to be informed that I had to pay over $400 to cancel.

I feel as if I was never clearly informed or disclosed that I could not cancel something as picayune as a magazine suscription w/o incurring such an exhorbitant cost. $500 hardly seems fair and tenable compensation for a couple of magazine subscriptions. I did not receive any magazines for over two months time, and was never informed either in writing or by phone of this needless delay.

In fact, when I tried to cancel, the salesperson refused, put me on hold for over 30 min. (probably hoping I would just hang up), and then tried to offer me reduced payments to continue making payments for a longer period of time. I assert that I could not have been more clear that all I wanted was to cancel my subscription.

Because the terms of the agreement were not made clear by both parties, I feel the concordance is one that warrants both scrutiny and perhaps further legal examination. I do not feel that this is a legal nor legitimate business practice.

Ex employee with the real scoop

Call them and make a lawyer threat and they have to cancel your service. At that point I would request a full refund. Don't let them tell you anything else about doing a service inquiry or anything that they may offer. You want a full refund by credit card.
