I currently have a Visa with Aspire Card. I am trying like crazy to close this account and it is impossible. You cannot reach a live human on the phone from any of the phone numbers provided on the credit card, invoice or website. All 3 places refer you to an email address. I've sent no fewer than 6 emails, 1 letter and 1 fax in the last 45 days asking them to please close my account. I have received no response. What prompted my original request to close the account is as follows:

Aspire had been invoicing me $6.50 a month for an "account maintenace fee" that I was paying even though I was not using the card. I was starting to get tired of paying this fee for the pleasure of carrying around their card in my wallet when a bill showed up in September for $150. This was for an annual fee. I decided then and there that I did not want to keep this card any longer as the $150 a year annual fee plus $78 a year in "maintenace fees" was way more money than I wanted to spend for a card that I had never once used.

So I tried to call them, which I was unable to do. So I emailed them twice in September asking to please close my card and to remove the $150 annual fee since I would not be renewing the card for the year. I received no response. Since I am in the process of buying a house, I finally sent payment on the 2nd of October for the $150 plus the $6.50 account maintenace fee along with a letter asking them to please close my account and credit me the $150 since I was not renewing the card.

I expected that was the end of it, except when I received an invoice for October, not only was my account still active BUT there was a $35 "late fee" plus the $6.50 account mainatenace fee listed as new charges! So now they claim I owe $41.50. I sent another email to Customer Service stating that I would NOT pay these charges and that I also wanted my $150 refunded. I also sent a fax to the dispute and customer service fax requesting the same thing. Of course I have not heard anything back.

I filed a complaint with the BBB and I am hoping this will get them to close my account and hopefully refund me the $150 PLUS credit me the $41.50. This $41.50 was due on 10-31-03 and I did not pay it since I don't feel I am obligated to do so considering I've been asking them to close the account since September. I am sure they have levied another $6.50 late fee against me. I don't know where to turn to get them to refund me my money and close my account. These people are the worst company I have EVER dealt with. I also just realized this week when I got my new Providian card, that Providian is now working with these people!

Please anyone reading this, DO NOT open an Aspire card or an Emerge card or any other card wiht Aspire/CB&T. They have been the WORST company I've ever dealt with. Not only do they charge ridiculous fees for NOTHING, but they also have a ridiculously high APR if you would ever happen to actually use the card.

Please anyone with info, please help me with this company, thanks.

STOP! ..before you think about using the Better Business Bureau (BBB)... CLICK HERE to see how other consumers were victimized by the BBB's false or misleading information. Don't be fooled! It has been reported, when there are thousands of complaints and other investigations underway by authorities, the BBB has no choice but to finally give an UNsatisfactory rating to a BBB member business that is paying the BBB big membership fees every year. When a business is reported that is NOT a BBB member, BBB files WILL more likely show an UNsatisfactory rating, then reportedly shake down that company to become a member of the BBB. One positive thing about the BBB is, either way, if a business has an unsatisfactory rating with the BBB, you can be sure, the business is bad. But what about all those BBB member businesses that had complaints filed against them? Consumers never get to hear about them. What about the BBB advertising to the public? Is this a false and misleading perception they are giving about consumer confidence when dealing with a business? Click here to understand more of what consumers and business alike are saying about the BBB. You decide. ..Remember. The BBB membership is not earned, it's paid for!

I got my money back!

AUTHOR: Sonya - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, January 22, 2004

After all the faxes, emails, etc. I finally got my refund of $211 from Aspire last week (Jan 15th). Of course, it was not as simple as just asking for it or receiving it, I had to send a special written request to a PO Box in Atlanta asking that the "credited amount on my card" be sent to me as a check... otherwise I am sure you can guess what would have happened - that $211 would have been eaten up in "fees" until it was depleted. They had said they were closing my account back in November, but did not. When I sent my letter in for my refund, the account was still open so I also sent a formal request (again) to close my account and finally did receive a letter back stating that my account was closed last week. So, good riddance and thank god, I got my money back. It just takes perseverance but you can beat these people at their own game. Don't give up, that is what they want you to do. This is called "breakage" and its pure profit for them. Don't let them get away with taking YOUR money.

Getting a refund from Aspire... we'll see!

AUTHOR: Sonya - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 21, 2003

Here is an update since my last report.... a few days after I filed that report, the Aspire Collections Dept. called me to collect $83.00 on a Sunday morning. I could not believe what I was hearing, they wanted $83.00 from me on a card I've been asking to close for 2 months? I asked the man if he was calling from the Aspire offices in Atlanta and he said no, he was calling from India. So, great, here we go.... he was not even someone who could help me resolve my dispute. I eventually agreed to a "settlement" amount of $54.50 to get them out of my hair and he PROMISED to close my account. This phone call was the last straw, however. Aspire now had taken around $211 from me in ridiculous fees for a card that I never even had used and had been trying to close. So that same morning after talking to Kerpal in India, I prepared and filed a formal complaint with the Maryland Attorney General and also wrote letters to the editor of all the major newspapers and TV stations in Atlanta. I also wrote a letter to Gwen Clark of Aspire/ Compucredit / CB&T/Emerge and faxed her that letter along with all the coorespondence between me and Aspire since Sept. I also called the Compucredit main line and left a VM with the president of the company explaining the problem.

Well, a few days later, I got a letter in the mail from Gwen Clark stating that my account was being closed (thank god) and that I was being refunded the $211 that I "overpaid". This was Monday 11-17-03 and of course I have not received the check yet. We shall see if I actually get the check.

For those of you wondering, you can reach Gwen Clark via fax at 678-258-5053 or 770-206-6181 or phone 888-522-2278 or via mail at 2405 Commerce Ave, Suite 300 Duluth, GA 30096. You can also find out her contact info as well as the president and officers of Compucredit by searching the BBB web site under CompuCredit. YES COMPUCREDIT, ASPIRE AND EMERGE ARE ALL THE SAME COMPANY. The President of CompuCredit-Aspire is Richard House. Rick Gilbert is the COO/EVP. Call 888-522-2278 and use the phone tree to get to them and tell them what you think of Compucredit and Aspire!
