On Monday of this week, my husband got a ltr from AssetCare. He called to find out when the acct was active because he had no memory of it (ATT). They gave us the dates and said we would have to call ATT for more info--no big deal.

But when I got to thinking about it, the number sounded familiar. So, I did some digging in our records-and found the original letters from SBC and another collection agency....My huisband's dad had gotten sick and he dropped everything w/ a roommate who ran up the bills in 99, so when we married-I contacted the involved parties and resolved all issues. I found the check to the original collection--pd in 2004, called and they verified it was paid and are sending another ltr for our records. Problem solved, right? I wish...

I called back to Assetcare, explained the details-the operator was rude, exact words "We have a different company name and it is not paid, how would you like to pay?"

Are u kidding me? It is the same phone number with the same dates--SBC was purchased by ATT after we paid it off. She continued to argue with me and hung up..

Call back, same operator-now will not discuss it with anyone but my husband-click.

Call back--no answer--three attempts...

Call from cell phone, same operator-my husband explains it all again-she gets irate and is yelling at him----at the same time I find this site, check the SOL and even if we had not already paid this-itis too late--I point to this and my husband states this to the operator who hangs up immediately. ????

I called ATT and they are floored, they connect me to the stone age accounts dept--it shows a zero balance because it was sold to the first collection agency. She did tell me to call FTC and the BBB and report this...and to call back to first collection agency and file a complaint with them as well.

So while this is still going on...our path is to send the same information to everyone except Assetcare-including the IG (active duty military seems to be a favorite target of this company).

I have called Assetcare and explained everything again this morning through an attorney (family friend) and they are still not getting it-big surprise!!!

The SOL is long gone--so the credit reporting on this would be illegal. After talking to an Experian op, if they try to report it, nothing will happen because of the SOL which all three credit guys follow.

This company needs to be taken down.
