They were very unprofessional. We moved here from out-of-state. The house was being remodeled and so we signed the lease on the good faith that they would finish and clean up. They also promised to mow the yard one last time and clean it up. When we arrived the backyard was knee high in spots, with broken clay plant pots in the yard. The garage was full of old carpet and other debris from the house.

We didn't get our copy of the lease until about 6 weeks after we'd been in the house. A couple of months after we got it, they called asking for it so they could make a copy of it. Five minutes later they showed up and my wife gave it to them hesitantly but wasn't sure what else to do. It might have possibly been changed then, but we have no proof.

Then the commode in the upstairs bathroom began to leak down through the floor on an outlet in the garage ceiling. We called several times that week to the "emergency" number and got no response even though we left 2-3 messages. We then found the owners home phone number on the caller ID from where he'd called and got in contact with him. He comes across as a nice old man who was very sorry and came to fix the toilet. The property manager is his daughter.

There was also a leak in the roof that took over a week to have fixed even though it was pouring rain the whole week.

The crux of the issue is that they slipped in a little clause about needing 30 days written notice before we could move out of the house. Our year lease had expired, but we were still required to give them 30 days written notice. The property manager lives in the neighborhood the house is in and saw us moving. She even came into the house unannounced while we were away to leave a renewal notice two weeks before the lease expired. We moved out at the end of May. She left that in the middle of July. Our lease expired at the end of July, and we did a walk-through on July 30th, she overnighted us a letter exactly 30 days after the walk-through to tell us we weren't getting our deposit.

Everyone we have talked to tells us this is a dirty little clause, that it's unethical , and we have been snookered. The owner even told us we needed to read the fine print before we signed a lease, when we spoke to him. The property manager would not return any phone calls.
