Last week of February we contacted AT&T to request Internet service. They said it would be $40/month with a mandatory contract for 1 year. Representative offered to send us a tablet for $1 if we signed a 2 year contract instead. After asking 3 times if there was any additional fee associated to this and being repeatedly told that our monthly bill would remain $40, I agreed to it.

Come the first bill we get a monthly charge for a data plan for the tablet. We called and after talking to several representatives (we kept being transferred and all of them were out of this country, not fluent in English and completely unaware of what was spoken to the others), they finally agreed to cancel the service of the data plan for the tablet, they still want us to be stuck with the two year contract and return the tablet but they never sent the box the said they would.

Next bill comes around and they are charging us $160 fee for cancelling a service we never requested. Called and talked to 5 representatives, kept being bounced around, no one understands what we are saying or much. Finally an employee agrees to cancel the fee and next day we go to ATT store to return tablet. They said there was no notes about the conversation with previous representatives and they will still charge us all the fees.

They put me on the phone (again someone in India) and after talking to several people, I was transferred to Stephanie In South Carolina office who says they stand by their charges, I explained to them I was willing to stay for the 2 years with the only service I ever requested and paying the agreed $40 but since they refused, I told them to cancel the service. They didn't take the tablet back so I walked out with it and now we are going to be hit with another fee for cancelling contract. AT&T is famous for their bogus fees but they take advantage of the lack of options. They did something similar to us before and also to my father in law. This kind of scams need to end, they know most people will get frustrated with the system and call bouncing and will pay up as to not ruin their credit but this time we are fighting for what's right.
