I switched our DSL service to SBC some months ago. At that time, I paid $50 for a new DSL modem, with the promise from SBC/AT&T that this would be promptly rebated. I filled out my rebate form and mailed it to the correct address. My information was entered into the SBC/AT&T system, according to customer service people. I have received no rebate.

I have called 3 times about this. Each time, I have been told the exact same thing, that a check would be issued shortly, and that I would receive it within 2-3 weeks of my call. After that time I call again and the whole thing repeats.

It is now obvious that I will not be receiving a rebate, in spite of fraudulent assurances to the contrary. I am currently looking for a class-action law suit to join to resolve this.

Thank you.

Thank you Paul. I'm also having the same problem with AT&T. It's been over 14 weeks since I mailed in my rebate form! Now they're telling me it'll take another 4-6 weeks for my check to be processed! I don't think so. I'm going to call CPUC like you suggested. Thanks again.

#4 UPDATE EX-employee responds

my rebate is being mailed

AUTHOR: Rita - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 10, 2006

I took my stamped & addressed rebate card to my local grocery store to get a xerox copy for my records. Six hours later, I discovered I had left my rebate card on the copy machine's screen. I checked with the store and it had not been turned in, so I hoped a kind person dropped it in the mailbox. A month later I called at&t DSL and they said they HAD received my rebate card and gave me a report number. I checked online today (Nov 10) and the rebate is processing and will be mailed on Nov 15 & I should receive it in 7 business days from that date
I am a 32 yr retiree from SBC (now at&t) & retired almost 3 yrs ago. These rebates take a lot longer than the 10 to 12 weeks!!!

A Possible Way to Get Your Rebate

AUTHOR: S - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, May 03, 2006

Thank you, Paul, for your info on the California PUC. I, too, have been fighting SBC for my $50.00 modem rebate. The tactics of long wait times, misdirection, and stalling were the same for me. I also found it impossible to reach a supervisor, and my requests for a supervisor to call me back were mostly ignored.

Today, I called SBC's billing dept. to file a PENDING CLAIM. Basically, it's a way to officially document that I will be paying $50.00 less than my total phone bill, and the reason why. After hearing my story (including that I have filed a complaint With CAL PUC)the representative graciously offered to apply a $50.00 credit to my next bill. Go figure - over a dozen calls to the rebate department later, someone in billing fixes the problem! I advise you to give this a try, and I'll be monitoring my phone bills to see if this credit actually shows up.

I'm finding a solution, hopefully

AUTHOR: Paul - (U.S.A.)

I contacted the Consumer Affairs Branch of the California Public Utilities Commission, who have opened a report on this matter. They then contacted the corporate office of SBC, and suddenly I've been assigned someone with some accountability to sort this matter out. The fact that the CPUC has opened a case and intends to follow up on the resolution of this matter seems to have made all the difference with SBC.

If you're in California, here's the number to call at the CPUC: 800-649-7570. They're very helpful.

#1 Consumer Comment

I was ripped off, too

AUTHOR: Pete - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, March 30, 2006

I ordered a $99 modem with a $50 rebate. I never got my rebate. When I called SBC, they said I never filed for it. Next time I'll send it certified so they cannot say I never sent it. SBC is a ripoff company that I will never do business with again.
