The basic premise of the marketing at Australab.com is that you can manufacture chemical products from anywhere including your home. In their marketing, they use testimonials from ordinary people who made enormous profits manufacturing products from home. I exchanged a few emails with Sam Stein the founder and he was very encouraging without being upfront about the issues. He assured me that he had many customers in the United States who were successfully manufacturing from their homes and there wouldn’t be a problem. I bought the program for $2000 and downloaded the manual and the recipes based on the understanding that I can manufacture from home. The first thing that struck me in the manual were the safety precautions. Below is an excerpt from the manual:

It is highly recommended you consult your local Fire Department before you begin manufacturing. Ask them to assess your workshop for any potential fire hazards and ask them to advise you on safety procedures in the event of fire. You must be prepared. The most important advice in case of fire is: Do Not Panic but leave the building as quickly as possible. Fire, no matter how small, can spread with alarming speed. If you are caught in a fire, take short breaths (through your nose) to avoid inhaling more smoke than necessary; crawl to escape as the air will be better closer to the ground. Never use elevators – stairs only, as a fire could cut the electricity supply, trapping you in the lift.

Close any doors or windows behind you to slow the fire from following you. Never open a door with a hot handle. If the handle is cool, stand behind the door and open it slowly. If you feel any heat or pressure coming through the door, slam it shut. In the event you are unable to leave the building, stay in a room with a window. When you are safely out of the building do not go back in – call the fire department. A professional fire assessor will be able to examine your premises and provide you with any recommendations for improving the safety of your workshop, as well as giving you written instructions specifically tailored to your environment for a safe exit in the event of fire.

I was desperate and got sucked in by Mr. Stein’s “Australian” charm. The reality is there are lots of problems and/or obstacles to manufacturing chemical products from home in large quantities. Clearly if you have to call the fire department to inspect your manufacturing facilities in your shed or backyard, then that already is a non-starter due to zoning regulations.

Furthermore the suppliers are savvy. They just don’t send supplies to anyone who requests them. I was able to get few samples by pretending to be a company but then the manufacturers had minimum order quantities usually 55 gallons that were not practical for me to order.

I have no doubt about Mr. Stein experience or the effectiveness of his formulas but to market his program as a home based business to the unsuspecting is a ripoff.

If you are going to buy the program make you have the proper facilities set up and don’t count on your backyard at the risk of getting in trouble with the law or burning down your house.
