I recently rented a car from Avis and want to inform everyone about their pre paid gas scam. I elected to use the pre paid gas as a convenience so I did not have to return the rental car with a full tank.

As most people are, I was in a slight rush when picking up the car. The lady checking me in explained the pre paid gas and had me initial that I agreed to it while doing the paper work. I got my paperwork together and headed out to my rental. After getting to my destination I took a closer look at the paper work. They charged me $110.00 for the pre paid gas. I thought that was crazy and started looking into it further.

The attendant said I would be paying $2.75 per gallon, the paperwork stated $3.15, 1st big mistake/rip-off. Then I saw where they charged for a 36-gallon tank. Well, I used most of the gas in it until the gauge almost read "E". Upon filling it, the tank only took 23 gallons, I was sure that since it only took that much it could not have a 36-gallon tank. I got out the manual and sure enough it was only a 26-gallon tank. Now at $3.15 a gallon that is a $31.50 up charge. I think this is a total SCAM!!!!

With that said, I will say I personally did not pay it. The attendant let me go fill the tank and removed the charge for pre-paid gas. Although it was a hassle to have to do I saved around $62.00 after all was said and done.

My thoughts are, how many people a year do not take the time to read the paperwork as I did and just pay this charge. With a $31.50 up charge on probably most of their cars that is a lot of money a year they are taking from their customers.

I did complain to Avis and this it their reply:

Thank you for contacting Avis.com

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience and misunderstanding
with the refueling charge. Because the refueling charges were taken off
by the counter agent when you refueled the vehicle, we can not see what
the error was on your contract or how it happened. Again, please accept
our apologies for the inconvenience. Have a great day.

Nice fluff but they do not acknowledge their deception or fault in anyway.
I would like to say

AVIS MAKE THIS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!! STOP RIPPING PEOPLE OFF.

If you want to add a charge to fill the rental up then state that charge specifically on the contract. Dont say it is a 36-gallon tank when it is only a 26-gallon tank.
