When my checkbook was lost several months ago, as a precaution, I requested the bank to close my existing account and open a new one. My new checking account was opened immediately with funds transferred from the old one the some day.  So far all seams to be going smoothly, however, the old account even without any money in it for unknown reason remained open, which went unnoticed by me since I opted out from getting paper statements.

At some point a small $7 charge came for annual subscription to some magazine. Unfortunately, I forgot to update my account with that vendor, so they used the old account number that they had on file. Well, the transaction would not go through if the account didn't exist, but not in this case. Instead they hit me with overdraft fee immediately as well as $8 fee for each day the balance remained negative.

It took about two weeks for Bank Atlantic to notify me by mail that there is any issue.  Next day after receiving a notice I transferred the $7 to cover the charge and complained to the bank's rep about the issue.  The manager was not available that day to remove the overdraft fees and charges but I was promised that the bank will take care of it and they will call me if there is any issue.   Nobody called me but two days later I saw that the $8 fee was still charged daily. I visited the branch again and this time the manager filled out some refund claim on line and assured me that the issue has been resolved.

As it is not difficult to guess, nothing was done by the bank neither to remove the fees nor inform me that for any reason they are not willing to remove them except mail notices for daily $8 charges. My attempt to resolve the issue with a customer service over the phone met deaf ears with reps hanging up upon my statements that phone call is being recorded.

Ultimately, Bank Atlantic resolved the issue by tapping into my other account and stealing money from there in order to cover all those fees that they generated over few weeks in the account that they supposedly closed months earlier.

I have to add that I was a loyal customer of Bank Atlantic for eight years with enough money in my checking account at the time to cover the petty ($7) charge in seemingly nonexistent one thousand of times.  The real customer service at this bank doesn't exist and in my opinion this Bank Atlantic runs a scam to run up fees and charges. They do not care about customers; all they care about is couple hundred bucks that they can scam their customers off. Well, they will not be scamming me anymore! Take my advice; any other bank in S. FL will be better than Bank Atlantic. These crooks should go down instead of some other good banks that were not bailed out by the gov.

I hope this review will warn and save other people from being ripped off by those rootless crooks of Bank Atlantic.
