On February 9, 2011 my son went online looking for a used car. He came across Barberino. He saw a car he liked and asked if I could go with him. We get there and after looking at a Maxima and test driving it he liked it. Never get too impressed with a car with the salesperson near you. It's his way of sweet talking you into a bad deal. After going inside and finding out that his credit was poor and that the Maxima would not be the car to finance they looked at their list. Time for me was getting short because I had to go to work in less that 1-1/2 hours. I had to get home and get ready. The sales manager comes over, real stuck up individual, and proceeds to tell me and my kid that this was a great deal, a great car and we should take it. I didn't feel any better then than when I walked in.

We left and I thought that was the end of it. My son goes back there that evening with his friend and he buys the car I told him not to buy. They sell him also a warranty with it. Altogether 12,000 dollars, for a 2001 Mercury Cougar that has an NADA value of 3200 bucks! They found a sucker and wouldn't let him leave. After a week I noticed while driving his car that the front end was making a clanging noise. Sure enough we take it back and the whole front suspension is shot. It's totally replaced. We also complained about the tires. After a week the car has no reverse. Back to the dealer. They replace the transmission. But they didn't suffer the cost. This car came with a 60 day dealer warranty. They billed the add on warranty company and the idiots paid for it. We also complained about the tires.

On March 4 my son was coming back from West Hartford after visiting his girlfriend. He was on Market Street in Hartford about to get to 91 South to get back home when his left front tire blows out. The car veers left and right and he hits the curb causing the right front tire to pop. All in all the car had over 1000 dollars of damage. Now the dealer is saying my son "must have been speeding" to cause this damage. Bottom line is they are trying to wiggle out of any responsibility. I have an attorney working on this and also was given a threat from the owner that he has an "Army of lawyers and the 10 times I've been sued I won them all". Sued 10 times? Must be a pattern. Do the right thing and put the kid in a safe car. Your army of lawyers doesn't scare me.

Did your son have insurance on his car?

AUTHOR: MovingForward - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, March 17, 2011

I don't see how you can hold the dealership responsible for the actions of your son. He is the one that brought you along to help him with his purchase and when you told him to not take the deal, he ignored your advice. He actually went around you by going back to the dealer with his friend to make the deal at a later time.

Then your son gets into an accident. Accidents happen, its why we have vehicle insurance.  It is up to your son to put in a claim with his insurance to pay for the damage to the car.  No dealership warrents tires on a car.  I am not defending the dealer, but this one is on your son. He is the one responsible for the accident. His insurance is reponsible to pay the cost to repair, less the deductable.

If you bail out your son on this one - he will continue to make poor choices and expect to be bailed out each and every time. He needs to grow up and take responsiblity for his own accident.
