I was searching through better business bureau to find out some information about another Raleigh business, and stumbled upon a report written by another consumer about Barbizon modeling school....I couldn't help but get my statement out there as well.

About ten years ago, my mother signed me up in the school, at the age of 13. Why? Because realistically speaking, I have the "model look" at 5'8" 115lbs, well proportioned, and a pretty face. So, please don't think these comments are coming from some angry, wanna-be model who just didn't have what it takes...b/c I have found sucess elsewhere. Unfortunately, my mother didn't do her research on the modeling agency and industry before signing me up for this school.

I'm not sure what kind of money my mother paid for this school, maybe a $1,000 or more, but for nothing. They teach you things that you could read from a book in the book store for under $50 dollars, or you could learn from simple observation. How to put on makeup? Please, I've worked as a makeup artist before at this point in my life, and have taught and done demonstrations on women daily on how to apply their makeup to enhance natural beauty...and did it for free! How to walk properly down a runway? Turn on the television to any fashion network and see "the walk" as it is constantly changing anyways...and at the cost of your monthly cable bill! And lets talk about the quality of teaching. How about former students of the school who didn't quite get anywhere in the industry being hired as the teachers, and showing up hung over, and with attitude to teach a class that we spend hundreds of dollars for, acting like they know a thing or two about an industry they never got two feet in!

Oh, and I was rewarded when passing this series of classes, and offered to move up in the school, woohoo, where we got to pay for some more completely redundant classes which would prepare me for the IMTA, which costed sever thousand more, with the hope of being discovered. Once finally making it to the big IMTA in NY, we were left to the wolves pretty much. They sort of let go of us from there, and did not further instruct us on anything else that would help to reach further success while there. Not only that, but the manager of the company who attended on the trip bought acohol for several of the minors on the trip. The girls got extremely drunk in their hotel room that night, and attended the next day of casting calls hung-over. Once the casting calls were over for the weekend, we received our call backs, if we got any. Those who gave me call backs looked at my portfolio, and asked who my photographer was, in dismay. And guess who it was....the manager, same woman who taught our beginner level classes...I guess she was also a photographer? Or was she? The agencies were disappointed in my pictures, and told me I needed to have them redone, professionally.
Lesson learned: Don't throw your money away!

Sincerely,

Jennifer

I don't know if you went to other schools while you went to other schools, but...
I have never in my life attended a class where I was taught material that could not be read from a book for under 50$. In fact, there's precious little that can't be learned from the internet for free.
The difference is, when you go to fill out your resume (or whatever models have) 'graduated from beauty school' looks a whole lot better than 'read a book about makeup.'
I know how you feel, I'm currently wasting thousands a semester learning redundant things in college. I wish there were a cheaper way, but there isn't.

Barbizon was the best investment I ever made. I would recommend the Raleigh institution specifically. In regards to the other review, yes... training cost money. To become a well rounded model/actor one must prepare themselves. Barbizon of Raleigh molded me into a successful actress. The helped me sign my contract with a NYC agency (I'm moving to the city very soon by the way) and they introduced me to some of the nation's leading talent managers and agencies. I've done a local commercial, some castings in NYC and just got cast for two movies to film this month. Like I sad before, it is an investment. Mine was totally worth it. It's all about what you do with what you are given. This place can change your life if you let it. It is a school, so yes there is a a tuition just like any other accredited educational institution. It is money well spent. My time at Barbizon of Raleigh has increased my self confidence and open many doors for me in the industry. I recommend it to all who are interested in becoming a model/actor... or just to build their self confidence. You get what you put in to it. Just because you have a "model look" doesn't mean that you get jobs. You need presence, attitude, confidence, an "it" factor. Anyway, I bet you didn't know that Jill Wagner, former Punk'd star, spokesmodel for Mecury Cars, and host of ABC's Wipeout graduated from Barbizon of Raleigh. As did Kristen Hansen... I'm signed with the same NYC agency as her.

Any source of training is a wise investment in this business. A good actor/model knows that the learning never ceases.
