For the public information, basic talk or basictalk.com is actually VONAGE under a different name, they are propbally loosing so much customer they had to try a new gimmick to lure victims. After, I saw the commercial online, i was very excited for this new affordable phone services, and I check their website and they clearly state no annual contarct, but they sent me a email stating 12 months agreement with $60 cancellation fee and want to give me a used equipment.

This is a scam tactic and someone must to stop these companies for taking advantage of us and misleading their customers. First they should clearly disclose that the are VONAGE, not after you siginup!

BEAWARE:!!! On their webiste, it clearly state NO Annual contract, https://subscribe.basictalk.com/plan?partner=FTSPARTNER&locale=EN_US (unless they've removed after my complaint)

BasicTalk: Good but Basic

AUTHOR: SRM - ()

POSTED: Monday, January 20, 2014

I have now had BasicTalk for 3 months, and I would like to make some observations about the service:

1. Yes, it is a Vonage company. You can buy the Grandstream (BasicTalk) ATA box either online or at Walmart. I assume that Walmart has some connection to the service.

2. There are NO contracts required, the service can be cancelled at any time. The service costs $9.99/month. The rest of the charges are governmental. My last bill was $12.13.

3. It is very, very basic service. You have CallerID, Call Waiting and Voicemail. That's it. Incoming calls usually display name and number. Outgoing calls display your number twice. Not a real problem for me. One nice thing: you can access your voicemail om the BasicTalk site.

4. The internet service is the limiting factor in this scenario (as it is with any VoIP service.) The faster and more reliable the ISP is, the better the VoIP service is.

5. The one negative about this product is customer support. Your only options are email or chat. Chat is only available M-F 9AM to 9PM EST. I have had to use the chat service a couple of times, and my problems were quickly solved. The wait for a tech sometimes is long.

6.BasicTalk says fax is not supported, but I have been able to send two local faxes. Would keep a landline if fax was that important to me.

Why pay more for phone service? I was paying $50/month for my Verizon/DSL service. FiOS not available, only the slowest DSL speed. Use Comcast and I have no real problems.

You signed up with Vonage NOT Basic Talk

AUTHOR: magicguy333 - ()

POSTED: Thursday, November 21, 2013

I am contributing to the original posting.

Basic Talk is service provided by Vonage.
Yes they are providing this service under a new name.
This was launched on May 14, 2013.

This is to offer a low cost phone plan, along with a lower cost equipment cost, and as well NO contract.
I can say this for myself because I used to have Basic Talk which I recently cancel their service from having problems with my internet service provider.

Their unlimited calling plan is $9.99 plus taxes and there is NO contract at all.
You can cancel at any time with no penalties.  It is a month to month service.

Vonage in the other hand currently offers a contract plan and a non contract plan.
Comparing to the plan offered under Basic Talk, their plan is US & Canada Unlimited.
With a 1 year contract is $9.99 a month for the first 3 months and $24.99 (plus taxes and fees) after the first 3 months.
They also offer a non contract plan for $$24.99 a month plus taxes and fees.

This information is clearly posted on the Vonage web site and that is where I just got it from.

After looking at the information that this person posted, it clearly shows that the information came from Vonage which is the company he signed up with NOT Basic Talk.

The first mentioned of it is:

Temporary Vonage Number*:***********

The second mentioned of it is:

Vonage Plan: BasicTalk(TM)

It also clearly says that he signed up for a 1 year contract:

Service Agreement: 12 Months

Then if you keep reading it further down it says:
Welcome and thank you for choosing Vonage.
You can access your online account today at vonage.com

When it gets to the part of the charges in detail it clearly says:

Vonage Reconditioned VDV23 Phone Adapter $79.99

The Basic Talk Adapter costs $9.99 plus tax at Walmart.

After looking through all the information posted this person clearly did not signed up with Basic Talk but with Vonage.  Being this the case his posting is irrevelant.

Also from looking at the receipt date shown on the information he posted which is May 29, 2013
and the date he posted on this site, May 31, 2013, he should have been able to contact Vonage and cancel his service under their 30 day money back guarantee.

I hope my posting helps others that might be confused between Basic Talk and Vonage even though both services are offered by the same company.

Vonage/Basic Talk

AUTHOR: Greg - ()

POSTED: Saturday, November 02, 2013

This complaint started off making sense. Yes "BASIC TALK" is a dumbed down VONAGE device, but it seems it's a Walmart product using the Vonage technology.

That said, he keeps saying that BASIC talk says they're no contract but from his invoice, he signed up with VONAGE.

I just signed up with Basic Talk. it's NO CONTRACT. Vonage on the othe hand is a 1 yr contact and there are termination charges after the first month.

I should state that I had Vonage and gave it up. The customer support is quite good, their system works great.........but I started off with a 9.99 plan and was being billed nearly $20. All kinds of service charges - some designed to look like Gov't taxes. The reps (spoke to 3) all said they were gov't taxes. I checked Vonage's site and discovered they weren't.
