I used to like the Better Business Bureau (BBB) but then I realized a few things after owning 3 businesses.

1.  If you don't BUY (key word) a costly membership with the BBB, they will rate you much lower than someone who DOES buy a membership.  Example, my business that does NOT have a BBB membership has 0 complaints in 3 years but has a D- rating.  However, a company like Bank of America with over 8,000 complaints is rated an A+.

2.  They don't check our your business before giving you an accreditation.  My first business, I was unaware of the scam of the BBB so I bought a membership.  BOOM, I instantly had an A rating.  Did they come in and verify I wasn't a scam?  No.  Did they check my financials or business practices?  No.  Did they even verify I was a real business?  No.  However, they did take my $800.

3.  You can't file a complaint against the BBB.  This might seem obvious but how can a company who claims to be a customer advocate not even be held to the same standards as any other business?  You should be able to file a legitimate complaint against them like any other LEGITIMATE business...except they're not legitimate so they don't allow this.

4.  Lastly, they're not a non-profit organization or run by the government.  It's essentially a large well run scam so people pay for their $800 per year BBB membership and people think this is official.  Its a very FOR-profit company that isn't much more than a database of names and addresses...much like the Yellow pages.  Their ratings are not accurate based on points 1 and 2 above and if you want to file a complaint...pick the phone and call the company you have a problem with or write them a letter or contact them on the website...same exact thing.
